GeForce 4200 vs. 4400???

Well, now that the GeForce 4200 has been released, an easy answer to what I should replace my Geforce 2 MX400 has just gotten harder.

At first I was planning on getting the ATI 8500 64MB, because of its low cost, but the lack of memory (its as much memory as my GF2) and the fact that the new 8500 w/ 128MBs is in the $300 area made me steer twords the 4200, which ment waiting for its release.

Now its out, and I again am perplexed. It seems the next step up from the 4200, the 4400, is only $30 or so more than the 42, so now its a question of weather or not I should go for the 4400, and spend the extra $30, or get the 4200, and save my money.

I know that the 4400 is about 10% faster than the 42 (so says the latest 4200 article), and I'm not sure weather thats worth the extra money or not. I want a card that will last me as long as possible, because after this, I plan on replacing my CPU (Duron 900) down the road.

So, whats the answer folks? 4200 or 4400? Which is the best choice?

Simple choose how much you want to spend then decide on the card - if you can afford the ti4400 buy it. Personally it looks like your cpu could do with an upgrade so you could get a ti4200 and a 1.2ghz duron for the same price as a ti4400

Actually, I'm planning on buying an XP eventually. Being as My 900 is OCed to 1050, I doubt the extra 150Mhz would make a diffrence.

Both of those cards breath fire. You will be happy with either one. If the $30.00 is not an issue, then the 4400 is the choice.

If you have a good place to put that $30.00 besides into video, you are not going to take much of a performance hit with the 4200.

IMO, the 4400 is a good choice, because the extra $$ for a 4600 is a little extreme....... (but again, really a subjective choice)

Like they said it´s pretty much up to you. But if you overclock then the only difference would be the memory speed. Because from what I´ve been looking at most of the core OC´s of the Ti´s and been around 320-330ish but the memory varies a lot from each model of card. Personally I would go for the 4400 if I had to choose now. But I´m going to wait to see what happens with all the ATI, Matrox, etc business. Should be interesting...

Dont know how the hell you got that score with that GF4 Ti4200, I have a GF4 Ti4400(300/620)/AthlonXp 1.47Ghz/384Mb ram and only get 8144?

What he got is not surprising at all. With your specs you should be getting alot higher but then again 3dMark is just a synthetic bench and isn't going to be as accurate in real world. Make sure that you don't have v-sync on and go run some benches again. I've seen some Radeon 8500's getting 8500-9000 or more and GF3's going that high as well.

go with a 4400...overclocks a bit better too if thats the route you take...but the proformance should be worth the extra 30 bucks

I agree with the others, I would pay an extra $30 for the Ti4400, but I wouldn't add another $100 or more to get a Ti4600.

If you wait another month that price difference will be more like $60. Places are gouging right now since they were just released and not yet in full circulation.
