No, I would say that it will be at best a sidegrade. Why not look for a used 9800 Pro/5900 class card? Just a few dollars more and arguably 2x the performance.

Just my opinion though :)

It depends. A Radeon 9600 Pro(5% slower than an XT) is around the same speed as a Ti4600/4800 in normal cases. However, if you enable AA or AF, the 9600 will begin to absolutely dominate the 4800. Not only that, but the 9600s have full DX9 support and can run many games of today well at medium to low settings.

In your case, I would recommend waiting until you can afford something that will give you much better performance(Such as a Radeon 9700/9800 or Geforce 6600GT).

This is a review of a Geforce4 Ti4600 (which is the same as the Geforce4 Ti4800) and features the Sapphire Radeon 9600 XT and Gigabyte PCX 5900. The Radeon 9600 XT is faster than the Geforce4 Ti4600 and usually beats it by between 20%-30%.

If you want a fairly cheap upgrade then why not consider a used Radeon 9700 Pro, This review shows what the Radeon 9700 Pro can do against Geforce 6600, Radeon 9600 XT and PCX 5900 In the review it says that the Radeon 9700 Pro is:- 17% faster than the Geforce 6600, 18% faster than the Radeon 9600 XT and 30% faster than the Geforce PCX 5900!

In Dx8, geforce 4 ti 4800 may be better, while it might loose in Dx9 and not to forget that games today no longer support geforce 4 or below: eg: BF2

I suggest you do a much larger upgrade, maybe more than just the gpu alone

6600, 6600GT, or ATI X1600Pro are all decent AGP upgrades from what you have now and won't hurt your wallet too badly.

geforce 4 DOES NOT SUPPORT DX9.
