I am in the market for a high end graphic card for my intel 850 Mobo. I just saw a MSI geforce 4 MX 440 card. I want opinions on this card as compared to the geforce 3 ti500 etc. Can someone help me understand how these cards are stacked as compared to performance...
geforce 2 (several models), geforce 3 (several models), geforce 3 ti series, now geforce 4 with several versions...i want to understand what these versions mean in terms of performance...etc...what does MX stand for? what does Ti stand for...why is the geforce 4 mx440 half the price of the geforce 3 ti500? etc...

thanks,

Performance:
DX8 cards

GF4 Ti 4600
GF4 Ti 4400
GF4 Ti 4200
GF3 Ti 500
GF3 (straight)
GF3 Ti200

DX7 cards

GF4 MX 460 - GF4 MX460 lacks full DX8 support of GF3 and GF4 but its sheer speed is around that of the ti 200. Out of the two I would take the GF3 ti200.
GF4 MX 440
GF2 Ultra
GF2 Pro/Titanium
GF2 GTS
GF4 MX 420
GF4 MX 400
GF2 MX/400 (128-bit memory)
GF2 MX 200 (64-bit memory)

As to why the GF4 MX is cheaper is mainly due to the fact that it is just a pumped up GF2. Dont be fooled by the Geforce 4 title given to the MX cards, they are not Geforce 4's.
However, if you can get a GF4 MX 440 for a good price (say only a little higher than a GF2 and still considerably lower than any GF3 card) I would say that is fairly good value for money. You wont have DX8 support, but then again at the moment that is not a big loss as there isn't much use of all DX8's features.

Great post vss1980...was very helpful indeed. OK here are my options based on availability here:

Prolink Pixelview Gforce3 ti500 64MB $340
Leadtek Winfast Gforce 3 Ti500 64MB $340
ELSA Gladiac 921 DVI Gforce 3 Ti500 $340
MSI Gforce 3 Ti200 64MB $170
Leadtek Gforce 3 Ti200 128MB $225
Prolink Pixelview Gforce 2 Ti200 64MB

These are the cards available here in KL, Malaysia and I need to buy one tomorrow. please help me chose. I dont mind getting something less expensive and wait for the Gf4 ti4600 to come out.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Out of those choices go with the Leadtek, they have a great fetaure with their cards for overlcocking. The Winfox software is great with the cards for overclcoking and telling you all about the way the card is running like AGP status etc etc. Make sure if you do get the Leadtek that you check their site cause when I got mine I had to download a registry patch to make sure the card was running at 4X AGP.

Heheh scooby I have read that article before I am going to make sure I have a G4 by the time I get Unreal 2 its gonna be needed to run the game at the resolution I am use to. That game is a MONSTE FPS killer I feel sorry for people that wont be able to play it without an upgrade.
