So what is the general opinion of the new geforce 4 series of vid-cards? Is there any point in getting the MX440? The reason I ask is because I am looking at getting a new graphics card (upgrade from an elsa geforce 2 MX 32 mb sdram card) and would the geforce 4 mx440 be worth the money? I found on pricewatch that someone is selling a generic mx card for around $97+shipping. But i am not sure about this "generic" stuff. I have had bad luck with "generic" ram, i am not sure about a "generic" vid card. Thanks for any opinions/advise.

The GF4 MX is a souped up GF2....you're better off paying a little more(or less..check the Hot Deals forum :)) for a GF3 Ti200.

I dont have any experience with 'generic' video cards, so I would assume that they are just nvidia cards (vision tek makes the cards sold as nvidia cards. Remember, nvidia is a CHIP maker).

The geforce 4 MX series of chips run the NV17 chip. The Geforce2's run the NV15 while Geforce3 is the NV20. See the discrepency? The Geforce4 MX's run chips that are basically beefed up, high clocked geforce2's with fast RAM. Im not buying a card any time soon, since I have my Geforce3Ti200. This is sitll a very good card, even if it is no longer as close to top of the line as it was. If you really want to get a geforce4, I would wait for the Ti4200 (if they ever get released :(), but my current recomendation would still be to go for the Geforce3Ti200.

Not bad for my second post ;)

Pass on the MX440, the GeForce3 Ti200 and Radeon 8500 are faster, and have more features for only slightly more $.

Personally I'd be strongly leaning towards the retail Radeon 8500, near GF3 Ti500 performance with more features at only $130 now.

I wouldn't dismiss the card that quickly.

For current 3d engines, it can perform as well as the gf3 ti 200, but the big thing is the nview. gf2/gf3 cards sucked for tv-output due to being limited to one or the other. I use my comp to play back non region 1 dvds, and divx so a gf4 mx with it's nview and idct would be very handy.

I'd much rather get the gf4 ti 4200 when it shows up, but it's gonna hurt the wallet for sure.

So, while not ultra fast, and a little weak on the tech side for upcoming games, it's not a horrible choice. It has it's place in the market.

I think someone ought to sue NVidia for misleading marketing on the GF2MX through the GF4MX series of cards. They have routinely LIED about which core the videocard uses by implying it uses the latest greatest core. You really have to delve into the fine print in order to discover the true nature of these POS videocards. If consumers solely go by the labels on the boxes it leads them to believe otherwise.

Up until afew days ago I was going to get a GeForce4 MX440, based on what I've read and heard lately I've decided to go for a GeForce3 Ti200.

Be glad you researched before you bought. Those GF4MX's are a royal insult to any consumer that picks one up. The real tragedy is the price they'll command for the namesake, even though older stock (like the GF3Ti200 you bought) is both cheaper and better.

There is going to be a lot of confusion. A GF4 MX440, GF4 4400. GF4 MX460 GF4 4600. Names are too similar for very different products. People will think they are buying a GF4, and are getting a GF2.

I agree oldfart, there are going to be way too many GF4 cards out and it will be confusing. The consumer will think that the MX is just the same as the TI except a "value" edition and end up getting backward tech.

If you can get a GF3TI200, go for that before any MX card now.
