why does geforce2 mx400 pci say it requires a p2 or higher? i cant use it on a classic p233mmx? why :p

trying to get the fastest card available for an old p233mmx, but i dont feel like paying for a rare voodoo... will i have to settle for a tnt2?

It will work with a Pentium (well it should do anyway, no technical reasons I can think of to stop it although chipset/PCI incompatibility is always possible, but highly unlikely to have a problem).

It probably wouldn't perform all that much better than a TNT2 in the same system, but I personally would rather have a nice new GF2 MX than a 2nd hand TNT2 or Voodoo3 card (mainly for the fact that the warranty and that the GF2 MX is cheap).

You just wont see many of the performance benefits of the card on a Pentium as you would on a P2 or faster system - not even sure the driver are optimised in any way for a Pentium.

i've seen it work fine on several computers ranging from p166 to a hacked together p300 MMX (the 266 and 300 mHz pentium's were notebook only, but would work on some desktop pentium motherboards just like the k6-3+ will work on some k6 mobo's). have fun.

I know a friend of a friend who has a Radeon 8500 running on a Pentium 200 non-MMX system. I'd imagine a GeForce2 MX would work fine.

It'll work fine. The "requirements" are mostly safety precautions as many systems that old arent very suitable for modern graphics cards.
As an example, my current card in my main system claims the minimum requirements are a PIII 733MHz which is obviously BS.

Make sure the Power Supply in the old computer and the MB can handle the increased power requirements of the GPU. That would be the only thing I could think of that would justify a PII board. Also, most pre-PII boards that aren't "Super socket 7" don't have a AGP, AGP2x, or 4x slot, which could be another reason.

If your board has an AGP slot, if you have a 300W or even a 250W PS I and an AGP slot I wouldn't worry about for sure. Just don't expect it to perform at the cards best...

I am pretty sure Hercules made a PCI MX board...

Hope that helps.
