Hi there.

I've been thinking about upgrading my PC - but being a poor student I'd like to pay as little as possible. Right now I'm using a Voodoo 3 3000 in a 466 MHz Celeron with 128 mb RAM - so nothing fancy. But I was wondering whether or not an upgrade of the videocard could give me a worthwhile performance boost? Or should I bite the dust and upgrade to 1+ GHz and 256 mb RAM (with the dreaded extra cost... hehe). As noted budget is a real problem! ;)

I know it's a crappy PC, but I'd just like to squeeze as much out of it as possible. :)

Thanks in advance.

You would be better off with a Radeon 7500 at this price point:
1. Better image quality, 2d/3d (GF2 3d CAN be as good, but not w/o big performance hit for aniso)
2. More features
3. Better dvd
4. ~equal gaming performance

In a nutshell, the 7500 does everything the GF2 does better, and more.

Thanks for the reply. I'll look into the 7500, although it is a bit more expensive the places I've looked (I'm in Europe, not the US). But if it's definatly better I'll be sure to think about it.

I bought a bunch of geforce 2 gts to upgrade my old systems that was running tnt2s, voodoo 3 pci/agps, matrox.. For 50 each, near new condition, it's well worth it.. and I empty out my old cards for around 30-40 each..

sold 110 worth of old card, bought 150 worth of new "used" card, well worth my effort...

What kind of motherboard do you have anyway ?

My motherboard is a socket370 Abit one. I can't remember the exact name.

But I think I'll just have to save up a bit and get myself an Athlon Palomino XP 1500. I think I'll like that better in the long run. :)

if you got an abit socket 370 motherboard with soft menu. Its good to GIG. Get a Geforce gts for 50 to 70 on this forum. Or get a Raedon 7500 from newegg.com for 96.00
And get a 1 gig Celeron 72.00 retail box. And you have good a viable rig again. that is better than twice as fast.
go to abits web site with the model # of you mb. You may need a bios flash. and you will need to verify that the fcpga chips will work in your machine. I think the chances are in the 90% that this is a viable option for you.

who ever said that a radeon 7500 is better than a gf3t1200 should read some reviews the ti200 kills the 7500 in every benchmark and it equals to the 8500 in quite a few of them the 7500 is the same as an original radeon except for the higher clock speeds and no vivo function

please...please...please accept my most humble apoligies I misread the subject heading and didn't realize that we were speaking of the geforce 2 ti 200 (stupid and confusing naming system)anyhow I totally agree that a radeon 7500 is a much better solution than a gf2ti200 so again I am sorry to react so quickly without reading the facts carefully.....
