GeForce 2 or 3?

The obvious choice would be a GeForce 3. But I'm on a budget, and probably won't be taking advantage of the GF3's power. So would it be a good idea to just get a GF2 and save some money?

Here's what I'm planning:

Case : Lian Li PC-12 Aluminium Mid ATX Case with 430W Enermax PSU
Floppy : TEAC 1.44MB Floppy Drive
Motherboard : EPoX 8KHA+
CPU : AMD Athlon? XP1700+ (1.47Ghz)
Hard drive : IBM Deskstar 60GXP 60GB 7200RPM ATA100
Memory : 512MB PC2100 266MHZ DDR
CD ROMs : Plextor 40X-Read/16X-Record/10X-Rewrite Retail
Sound cards : Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! 5.1
Monitor : ViewSonic EF70 17"
Video : GeForce2/3
Speakers : JVC HeadPhones
OS : Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

if you're planning on playing at very high resolution, 1028X768>... gf3 will serve you well. if you're like me, max at 800X600 gf2 is enough.

Very high res? A high res is 1600x1200. A GF2 MX could run 1028x768 easy. But I don't think it's res we need to talk about. The question is, what do you do with your PC?

Lastly, you have one nice PC in progress. You should just pick up the GF3 to do your new rig justice.

High resolution = 1024x768??? Are you joking?! I'd hardly consider 1024x768 a high resolution. 1600x1200 is high, anything lower is normal. And lower than 1024x768 is repulsive. . .

Any video card better than the MX line will do fine @ 1024x768.

I'd suggest the Ti200. It is a great card for the price.

Definately go for the GF3 Ti200 card over any GF2 card. Since you are using a really good cpu (XP 1700+) you will be able to take full advantage of the GF3's power.

It is not worth it to go for the cheaper GF2 card. I felt a huge improvement when moving from my GF2 Pro card to my then new GF3 Ti200. Of course after that I wanted even more power and so I moved up to the GF3 Ti500, but my GF3 Ti200 was easily able to oc to past stock GF3 levels (200/460).

If you are not a gamer or casual gamer, don't bother with GF3.
If you are gamer and wants high quality display (i.e. setting all games to "High" or "Detail" and includes anti-aliasing function), then buy GF3.
