I´m going to buy a new computer in the next days here in Brazil(Duron750+A7V133, Palomino after...) and I have two options of video card to buy: Geforce 2 MX 32MB (ASUS 7100) or ATI Radeon 32MB SDR. I think that this Radeon is the best option for me(only U$10 more expensive than g2 mx here), but I´d like to know what this forum think about it? (I already read the article about the ATI Radeon SDR in this site...)

In truth, I´d like to buy the ATI Radeon 32 MB LE(I read the article of this card too...), but my salesman did not found this card...:(
(My salesman has ATI rage too, but I don´t know what it is...)

I´ll run Linux RedHat 7.1. too, and I saw that there is support to it...(I´ll run windows too...)

Thanks for any help, I´d really appreciate it...:)

hmmm.... I guess it all depends on what you need your card for. If youre going to be playing alot of games, preferably in 32-bit mode, then the Radeon SDR would be your best bet. However, the Geforce2 MX has better 16 bit performance, and its drivers for linux are arguably more stable. If you are gearing towards the Radeon SDR, try really hard to get the Radeon LE instead, because they cost (roughly) the same, and the Radeon LE will give out much better performance. I dont know much about ATI linux drivers (or even if they have any, for that matter). And if you're going to upgrade to a Palomino, then maybe you should consider the Kyro II. It provides excellent performance at its price, but only with a stronger CPU. And once again, I know nothing of the driver issues with Kyro and linux, or even if there are any. I hope that helped

The performance between the two cards is very close, and there are situations where either would edge out the other card. The Radeon has better m,anagment of it's memory bandwidth though, so in higher resolutions it'll usually edge out the MX, in most other cases the MX is slightly faster.

The Radeon has better 2D visual quality, and better DVD support also, though the drivers are arguably better for the MX.

Thanks for the opinions above, I really appreciated it!

For my case, I really think that Radeon is the best option, because I am looking for more for image quality than fps...

I had read the anandtech´s articles before, so I already knew that Radeon SDR(and LE) is a little superior in performance at higher resolutions and 32 bits of color than mx, so it´s good for me...

I also read another thread in this forum(general hardware: "Poll: Which would you rather get? Radeon vs. MX --> why?") and there the majority of people said to get the Radeon instead of mx. Although the discussion there was more between mx X radeon LE, I think the opinions are also valid to radeon SDR(for what I know, the quality is the same, because the only difference is the memory...)

Thanks...
