One of my friends is looking for a cheap but decent video card now...so he's interested in the GeForce2 MX.

Well, here comes the question...

He's in CS major(as well as myself), so he really needs good 2D quality(which I know many of you will get Radeon into this) for programming(we run 1600x1200 very often) and good Linux support(which Radeon is out of picture). I'm suggesting him the Elsa or VisionTek GeForce2MX(not the MX200; either the original MX or MX400). Is there any other suggestion?

Please help me(him actually) out. Thanks.

The Elsa. Elsa generally have better 2D than the other brands.

Or work with two video cards.

eVGA? Honestly, not so... I've bought one from PCClub in southern CA...and the text at 1280x960 is blurry...:(

The text problem isn't very hard to fix if you know how to use a smoldering tool, and you don't worry about breaking FCC regulations... but I'm with Archnight on the Elsa, it offers superior 2d graphics. If you were looking for a good Windows card, I would recommend Hercules' version of the Geforce2 MX.

I have heard Elsa is pretty good in GeForceMX...:) But isn't it true that VisionTEk OEMs cards for Elsa?

As for Elsa, my personal experience with its GeForce 256 SDR is less than satisfactory...the 2D is blurry. But then again, I haven't tried any other Elsa card...:p
