Set the stage:
I've been a voodoo fan for a long time. Got four systems lan'd in the house, all with various voodoo cards. The oldest system has a TNT/V2 SLI setup so I thought it was time to upgrade. All components migrate down if you know what I mean. The new is always better, therefore goes in my personal system (P3@970). Had some earlier nvidia products and wasn't extremely impressed (riva 128zx, tnt and tnt2 which got fried OCing). Since 3Dfx is basically gone I thought I'd give nvidia another shot.
The problem:
Got a 32meg DDR Creative Annihilator 2 GTS yesterday and was up to 4am trying to get this thing performing like I've been lead to believe it can perform.
Drivers: first used creative's fastrax based on nvidia ref 6.34 dated 10nov00. second used nvidia ref 6.47 dated 1nov00.
Bios came flash to the lastest CL listed bios.
System: P3 700@970 on a Soyo sy-6ba +100 BX133 mobo, FSB 138mhz, AGP bus 92mhz, 256 mushkin pc 133 rev 2, Ibm Deskstar 45gig ata 100 hd. The V5 handles the high agp bus just fine but I did drop the fsb to 100 (ie agp 66mhz) for a few runs just make sure the Annihilator wasn't choking on it. It scaled the same. And the FSAA is off in the drivers. The V5 was clocked at 180 and GTS at default
200/333.
Benchmarks: (Yea I know 3dmark Stinks)
D3D (some older games but a good ref btwn the two cards)
3dmark 2000 default benchmark
GTS V5
d3d hw t&l opt.
2550 xxxx
p3 opt.
4100 5200
What gives with this? the V5 out performing the GTS?
The HW T&L 2550?????? It fails the 64meg rendering test saying there is not enough agp memory? Agp aperture set 256, 128 and 64, no change, still fails this test. My V5 passes and doesn't even use agp memory? Bad card???????
Drakan d3d 800x600 FPS test
GTS V5
64 fps 68 fps
again, the V5 doing better? I thought the V5 would only do better in UT based games.....
Opengl (don't own Q3, live in the country, no dsl/cable)
do have Q2, Sin etc...
Sin 1152x864 16bit everything maxed
GTS V5
57fps 62fps
Stars, an opengl benching program.
without posting all the numbers, I compared with a guy who had a Tbird 1gig w/V5 and a guy with a P3 700@700 on a Elsa GTS at default. My V5 performed on par with the Tbird at all resolution but the GTS out performed the V5. So imagine my surprise when I set my GTS on a P3 970 and the elsa p3 700/my V5 scores significantly out perform it.
Conclusion: There's something really wrong with this card. I'm really ticked. I thought this thing would fly. I wanna believe this is a bad card but I've seen some other posts where people are complaining of really low benchmarks/game play. Yes, I did try to play some games. I'd like to believe my V5 is a super card and nvidia should've folded instead of 3Dfx but...
Need some ideas pretty quick. Is this a bad card or is there tweaks I'm supposed to know about.
If I can't get this resolved by tomorrow, it's going back and I'm getting another V5 or even a V3, there really cheap. :disgust::|
