GeForce 2 GTS or stick with V3 3000 & buy NV20 when it comes out?

I'm building a AMD 1G machine with all the extras as a Christmas present to myself. The problem that i'm having is justifying spending $200 on the GTS now, and it becoming obsolete in a month or two (Not really sure of the timeframe), when I have a V3 3000 AGP card just sitting around. So, should I wait for NV20, or get a GF2?
Thanks in advance.

tough decision dood.
i'd stick w/ the v3 3000. but then again, the gts does have great performance, much better than that of the v3 3000, and the nv20 is going to cost you waayy more than 200 (try $400-500).
dunno what to tell you. if you're a gaming freak, go for the gts now, and then starve yourself for 6 months to pay off the lease you got to pay for that nv20 you told yourself you wound't get 😉

Just play with lower resoloutions till that new card comes out. Thats qwhat I would do. infact that is what I am doing now. I a still using a tnt2u with my 800 Mhz proc.

i used to have a v3 200 agp- upgraded to geforce2mx told help keep me until nv20 or another card (perhaps one i can afford) comes out.

I have a V3.
I'm waiting for the NV20 / Rampage generation becuase they should be nice and speedy and fully directX8 compliant.

I think it's worth the wait.

And when the NV-20 comes out, the "NV-20GTO Nitro Ultra Pro" will be just a few months away!!!

I killed my GF2 GTS & was faced with the same decision. I ended up buying an $80 Evilking V3, which is rated at 183 MHz. Not a bad deal, really, V3 3500 speeds for $80. It will last me until NV20 hits. Besides, it's not like I really do any high-res gaming. Or much gaming at all, for that matter.

Viper GTS

A GF2 MX will hold you nicely until the NV20 comes. It's cheap and it's much faster than the V3, can't say much about high resolution 2D OR 3D though...

That's true WAH, the reason I'm waiting is for full DX8 compliance.

If I didn't care so much about that I'd just get a GF2Pro or MX and be done with it.

Oblique, I had this sort of problem when My 900mhz T-bird still had a TNT card in there ,I was really after a NV20 but they were not available & I needed something half decent, anyway buying a Geforce2 GTS was not on my list because of near future upgrade to(NV20) so I ended up buying a Geforce2 MX for the time being.

In your case I would either stay with the Voodoo3 3000 or buy something like MX,but being it`s not too long before the NV20 comes out, I think I would wait & save the money for the NV20 since it`s not going to be cheap.

🙂

LOL, would it comfort you more if i said I have a Diamond Stealth 2000 Pro (4mb) video card? running on an AMD K6-233? The thing is so ancient, Thomas edison used it before he invented the bulb...in fact, it's so old and slow, when I pissed on it I think it was considered an upgrade.

Okay someone tell me more about this NV20? Sorry I've been out of the scene for awhile due to school. Who makes it? How fast will it be? What's all the tech junkie stuff behind it? last but not least, how SOON is this thing suppose to be out?

Daudi, the NV20 is the generic "thing just around the corner" that you always find in computers.
This thread is basically a philosophical question. If you need something more now, get it now. If you don't then wait. Simple. I would point out that the MX can do 2-3 as many triangles as a V3, so if you bought that you'd be cosy and save $100 for the NV20 at least...

The NV20 is just the sucessor to the GeForce2.

It should be faster than a GeForce2, that's about all that is truly known about it.

I'm sure if you ask hardware you will find that it will cook you breakfast and give you a morning hummer while you eat it. But seriously not much is known about it.

I'm just waiting for it becuase I'm assuming that it will be fully DirectX8 compliant, if it turns out I'm wrong I'll save myself a few $ and buy a V5-5500 or GF2Pro which should both be quite cheap then.

I would stick with the V3 3000 for now. Not the greatest by far in the newer games but you might as well wait given that the NV20 will be out early next year (and who knows - maybe Radeon2, Rampage 🙂). If you didn't have a half-decent video card, then I would say get something from the current generation, such as the V5, GF2, Radeon, just so that you can better use the capabilities of your system when gaming. Keep the V3 for a couple months to see how things pan out for the next generation of video cards. You could always buy, say, a GF2 Ultra by then as I'm sure prices will have gone down.
