Geforce 2 GTS or New Geforce Card? 10yr kid will be using - Extreme Low Budget

Hey guys,

I've got an old PIII 800E with 384mb ram that I just loaded up for my dad's g/f son. He's only 10 and enjoys playing computer games. He is currently playing Call of Duty on my pc at the house when I'm not on it, my system is a XP1800 with a geforce ti4600. Anyway, to get to the point..

I'm gonna load up the PIII with games and such so he can play in his own room. Right now, the system has onboard video which isn't very good. I'm looking to upgrade the video to something a little better for gaming. What would your recommendation be for a card. Granted, it doesn't have to be super fast or anything just enough to get him by with something that isn't deathly slow.

Would a Geforce 2 GTS be better than a Geforce 4 MX440 or something of that nature. I'm looking to only spend around $30 or so and am probably gonna purchased used from For Sale/Trade or Ebay. I've found a few Geforce 2 GTS cards for the $25 range shipped on ebay from the auctions I've been looking at over the last few days.

Just basically looking for some ideas here... Keep in mind I do not want to spend a lot of money. If a older model ATI would be better and falls into that price range, let me know.

Thanks for your help.

Both cards will perform about the same, with the GF2 probably edging out the GF4 in some instances. I sold my GF2 GTS on FS/FT for $25 shipped, IIRC.

As you can see by the two previous posts, the GF4 MX440 and the GF2 GTS are pretty close in performance. Maybe even see if you can snag a good deal on a GF2 Pro - it's got faster memory than the regular GTS, which really helps overall speed.

Thanks for the responses, keep the opinions coming..

I think another option may be to buy a cheap geforce 2 gts and take the ATI 8500LE I have in another system that is never used for any gaming and swap them around...

An ATI 8500 64mb DDR LE would be the best out of those 2 right?

That's only sort-of true; the 440MX is rated 270/400, the GF2U 250/460, and the GF2GTS 200/333. As such, the 440MX will be faster than the GTS all the time, and faster than the Ultra if and only if the core is the limiting factor.

Make sure your motherboard can handle the video card.

There are inconsistancies in the voltage to the AGP slot in which case a newer card may not work.

If you can spend just a little more money you can pick up a Radeon 8500 that would be much better.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I think I'm gonna pick up an old Geforce 2 GTS I've been looking at that seems to be a good deal. I'll just put the GTS in my other system that I never use for gaming and pull the ATI 8500LE that is in that system out and put in the PIII that will be used for gaming...

Thanks again.
