That takes me back... My first build was a K6-II 400MHz, Asus P5A, Diamond Viper V550, with an SBLive all in huge In-Win full tower case running Win98.

...never did have a 3dfx card :(

my first build was Pentium 166 64mb aTI rage 2C 2.1GB... Ah nostalgia :p

I've got one collecting dust somewhere. I no longer have a Mobo to put it in nor a CPU that would fit such a Mobo. One day I might use it again.

Back in the day my buddy had a GeForce 2 GTS 64MB... man, did that card rock back then.

I've been thinking about putting together a nice nostalgia machine myself, I figure an old socket A Duron/Thunderbird system with a GeForce 4. A little Diablo II, Red Alert, HOMM2 & 3... ah, memories. I've also always wanted to try Daggerfall, but never have yet.

a geforce 4 doesn't seem far enough back, nice card though. I think I'm going to do a case mod to show off the power of this beast. I'm remembering how cool some of those doom 3 case mods were and gathering up ideas of my own.

I have 2 of them sitting right in front me, collecting dust.

I found an upgrade to run a 1.3ghz celeron (tualatin) on it. that would make a nice linux box.

I would like to have my old Compaq K6-2 350 (@ 400 MHz, passively cooled :D) with a Voodoo3 2000 PCI and 256MB of PC100 back. That was a sweet little box! I added a 20 gig hard drive to the stock 8 gig, and replaced the CD-ROM with CDRW and DVD drives. The power supply was strained, no doubt about it.

I remember the day I installed the Voodoo3 (as an upgrade to the onboard ATi Rage Pro 4mb), and an extra 128 mb of RAM (192 total at the time). I was playing Rogue Squadron on the onboard, and suffered deeply. I installed the Voodoo and the extra RAM, selected GLIDE, got back into the game and was absolutely shocked by silky smooth gameplay at 1024x768 with full details, where I was barely choking by at 640x480 with the ATi.

I was so happy that day, trying all my favorite games - Quake 3, Carmageddon 2, Unreal, Unreal tournament, you name it... Those were the Halcyon days....

Amen brotha'! I sold my Voodoo5 last year (I think), but I still have my Voodoo3 3000!

Oh my god I remember getting my 3 3000 in my parents' old compaq. That was still a fairly hot card back then; it could play counter-strike on high graphics settings at max res on our 56k.

Hell ya, those V3 3000 were crazy hot and passively cooled! I also had a V5 5500 and even though it was slower than the GF2 DDR, I really got some great use out of it in D2 with better visuals at the time too. Ran it on a Abit BE6-II with an OC'd P3-500 Slot 1...jumper OC'ing ftw! :)

The K6-2 is gunna suck in some of those games, especially UT. UT is a very processor intensive game. The V5 5500 will be great though. I would also suggest Windows 98 if you're not morally against it like some people. Alot of old games just don't work right in XP. Plus, doesn't Win98 natively support DOS games while XP doesn't at all? Use the 2.0 P4 as long as you can get Win98 drivers for all your stuff. If not, then try to find like a used >733mhz P3 system. I don't think you'd need more than two 256mb's. Most people back then only had about 128 to 256mb total and I don't think any game could ask for more. Oh, and make sure to use a modern 7200/8MB hard drive because the old FAT32 filesystem (being a little ineffieicent) benefits alot from it.

I have this rig with a ton of nice games on it
933mhz P3
256MB PC-133
Voodoo3 3000
Sound Blaster (forgot which)
80GB WD 7200/8
22" NEC Diamondtron
I just gotta find an Aureal Vortex card

True, GTS is faster than 5500, however that doesn't really matter for for novelty rig that will be running old games only. On the other hand there are a number of old games such as Carmageddon or NFS2SE that only run on GLide which makes 5500 a much better choice.

Both of them do, in a sense. The main limitation is with sound. You need to have either an SB or compatible card (an SB16 is ideal) or an SB Live/Live 5.1 with a motherboard chipset supporting ISA, even if the card itself is PCI. Although the latest versions of Dosbox have made all this largely irrelevant, as they run just about anything DOS perfectly.

I agree though that 98 is better for such a system anwyay. DOS games aren't so much as an issue as earlier Windows games, which may not work properly on XP.

*hadn't read much passed the first post* I'm actually on a K6-2+ 500 now (and highly suggest you get a + chip for that 'beast'- ebay!) and I suggest to ONLY use the Voodoo with it. The thing I don't like, I can't watch my videos now!! I recently bought a 16mb cache IDE drive (newegg), that might help, but I'm not exactly expecting it to. I had to install XP to this thing (w9x don't do wireless... apparently) and with my 256 megs it's a DOG... but I think when I finally max out my ram (just bought 768mb SDRAM off ebay!! ... it's ECC so didn't work -DAMIT!!-) and intall the HD I think it'll work.

Anyway SS7s still have some life in them! just get a plus chip... and truthfully life is dawning on even these guys, good luck getting x264 or HD to play on one. But it's still fun to reminisce... God I was a dork back then. I mean, I still a dork now, but life was much harder than and I didn't even notice. UBER -_-

Hey, if anyone needs one of these I have a few old ISA Soundblaster cards. Willing to ship them for cost of postage + Paypal fees + cost of envelope + a buck or two for my time and gas money to go to post office. :p

Rig is up and running like a champ... Voodoo5 5500, 512 megs of pc133, 30 gig seagate U series 5, Intel d845hv mainboard. right now I have a spare copy of windows xp pro installed. I'm looking to intall windows 98 but all I have is an upgrade disk. I'm in need of windows 95 or something so i can upgrade to 98. Anybody following this thread have what i need? I have the rig setup in a cheapo case that I want to case mod. Think ing about doing an original Unreal mod to it. maybe something on the lines of a napali artifact or something.... got any ideas? Maybe something representing the voodoo?

do you have 98 or 98SE?

the upgrade cd is the complete version. Just install it like the xp cd by booting off the cdrom. that's what i used to do with 98SE upgrade.

Actually, plain old 98 retail upgrade ought to do a full install just fine. Make sure your CD drivers get loaded ...

And this thread is getting too typical of the time when GTS and V3/V5 were on the market. In fact, it's kinda still that way today IMHO. Do you want bleeding edge fps numbers or very good fps numbers along with superior IQ ? Reminds me of comp.sys.ibm.hardware.video newsgroup days ... :D
