What did you people expect? It was impossible to predict the exact spot where MIR would fall and mount television cameras in the vicinity for live feeds.
On the other hand, I envy people who actually saw MIR crash. I've seen a couple of meteor showers (on some nights the meteor activity is higher than usual, up to 100 meteors/hour) and I must say it's really a mind blowing experience, seeing bright meteors fly across the sky. I can only imagine what a show people in Fiji and on airplanes had earlier today.
BTW: Ever tried to photograph a firework? Photographs never turns out as beautiful as seeing it with bare eyes.
