After my school expenses for my first year at university are paid, I'm only gonna have about $2000 cdn to last me for 8 months of school.

I'm already working M-F 9-5, and now need to get a 2nd job (i'm thinking M-F 6-12).

god this is not gonna be fun at all and its only my first year. at least 3 more depending on what I decide to major in or if I decide to change.

I'm worried!

I start in September.

We in Canada should count our blessings for our well-run public higher education system. Go south of the border and find out how much it costs to go to a "good" school (usually private).

I get really tired of hearing young morons complaining about how much an education cost! As a percentage of the dollar you have it cheaper than anyone ever has. Can't afford it? Get a job!

Blame the college. They are the ones soaking up $$s like a sponge...

kami,

I work at a picture/picture frame store. I'm making $7.25/hr (A whopping 4.68 US!), and considering the min. wage is $6, I'm making more than most people I know).

It varies by province. Either way, I'm making just over the minimum.

edit

I'm in Manitoba. Do we have a MSAP?

You might want to consider becoming a man-whore. I hear the pay is good, and the work not too shabby.

Hey! Dim Wit! I'm the taxpayer paying the major part of your education! I didn't go because I could not afford it.

Too bad you want it all without the sacrifice as you might actually amount to something.

The People of my age have given you more opportunity and sacrifice than you will ever deserve...

Tom, I should point out that Stefan has already said he is in Cananda. So you just took your foot and put it in your mouth. Unless of course you believe that US tax dollars pay for canadian universities.

Without sacrifice? Working 2 jobs and having no social life whatsoever to pay for school is not a sacrifice?

I believe that although you may not have access to OSAP, since that is keyed to the province of Ontario, you have access to the Canada Student Loan program in some form. You should look it up. I would give you URLs if I knew. The Feds' various websites are a maze. In Ontario, half of students' OSAP payments come from the Province, the other half comes from the Canada Student Loan program.

lol...y u gotta hate tom? Well, rest assure ur and my daddy's money ain't paying for my
e-d-u-c-a-t-i-o-n...

and saying no1 can afford a college degree is totally BS. Unless you have a mother stricken wit a life-threatening disease, no father, brother and sisters are in jail, i'm sure you can go to a bank and get a loan. OF course, you will have to pay it back for a long time, but at least you have accomplished.

True Tom, you are one of those "lucky" ones who didn't need an education to get ahead in life, but how many (percentage) are able to make $50k - $100k+ w/o a B.A. or B.S. within the first 5 years out of high school nor with 6 year working experience (taking in fact "normal" ppl graduate college at age 22 and high schoolers graduate at age of 18? I'm sure not more than, say, 20%?

well, i didn't have money for college, but I sure took a big non-interest loan to go to school. Also there is a thing CALLED THE MILITARY! I was gonna go to get them to pay for my education. THERE ARE ALWAYS WAYS TO FIND MONEY, HARD AND EZ WAY, U JUST HAVE TO WORK A BIT HARDER THAN THE REST LIKE STEFAN IS DOING.

props to stefan for recognizing the fact he needs money for school year and doing something about it!

Stefan,

Welcome to life. It ain't easy :)

On the bright side, all this suffering and hard work WILL pay off if you make the best of it. Just be glad you're starting young, while working two jobs and going to school is still physically possible for you.

Good luck to you, and keep your head up! You'll make it if you keep a good attitude and sense of direction... I promise.

Anyone who tells a college student looking for a second 8-hour job that they need to work harder and stop whining has some serious issues...

Ths thing is, my parents are willing to pay for my tuition and my books. I was going to go to university on a free ride.

Now my parents keep telling me about how they paid for it all themselves and had to work their asses off, and still take out loans. I realized a few days ago that I would be the first in my family to go on a free ride and I don't want that.

I would say I've been a spoiled kid my whole life. I didn't always get what I wanted, but I have probably had more than most people I know (no I dont have a nice car or anything like that - I'm not that spoiled).

I'm the last week, I realized that I want to pay for school myself. I've made lots of money since I took my year off of school, but I've squandered most of it, only now realizing that I really really need it (hence needing a second job).

I'll agree with most of your post...but...[you knew that was coming]....

It wasn't all that easy 30 years ago. In the US and Canada mor dollars are spent per capita every year. The increase far outways anyother budget increase.

Lucky you say? Shows how nuch you know....I come from one school! It is called 'Hard Knocks!' I'm surprised I've survived.

Can't afford it...don't buy it! Put off the education for a year. Work HARD! Save $$....I know, at you guy's age it's hard to do. But you MUST realise that your future is brighter because of those, like myself, that continue to pay higher and higher taxes to fund education. Your tuition is a fraction of what it costs!

I see Colleges fund purely Socialists programs that do not teach anything worth a damn, but still I fund it...

No prayer!...but allowing every form of deviant activity ...yet YOU would silence me?

Today! Not yesterday! YOU, yes YOU! can put $2000 dollars in a Roth IRA each year for the next 5 and YOU will retire a millionaire.....YOU have the gaul to complain!

Maybe Bush SHOULD start a war. Draft your lazy asses! [No, not really!] It might show you how GOOD you have it.

BTW, I wish everyone of you my best. And if it takes more spending and more government funding to guarantee you will not need to go through what my generation has, it is money well spent. Afterall, the same thing happened in the previous generation....and their sacrifice is something the Liberal Professors that will teach you will never admit.

BTW, I've never had a job that I did not work at least 48 hours a week. After 25+ years working, I put in 60+ hours a week. My taxes usually go up faster than my salary can keep up.

Stefan..you may worry, but on the worry index it hardly registers...

Stefan: Why don't you accept all you can get from your parents and put the energy into your education? If you want to pay, pay afterwards! If you wish you could always formalize the agreement with your parents into a loan, with interest...

University studies can be hell if you don't have enough time for them! :D
