For those of you who haven't checked it out, the Prelinger Archives are a must-see. It contains many "ephemeral" films that are really interesting. There are educational films from the 50s, propaganda films from WWII and the like. I have actually went and burned many of these to VCD (its legal!) and spent hours watching them.

One of my favorites is "The Big Bounce" which is about project echo, a 100' diameter aluminized polyester balloon, shot into orbit that they bounced signals off of, a precursor to satellite technology. The successfully send signals between Holmdel, NJ and Goldstone, CA. Really cool stuff.

Hahah, I was just about to mention that listing. It's amazing how Sex Education can be listed 3 times in a top 5 list :D

Does anyone know where I could find old propanda films and speeches from the cold war times? Like, Reagan's "Tear Down this Wall" speech and the one where Kruschev is banging his shoe on the podium in front of the UN yelling, "We will bury you!"?

I really want to find those.

Wow, I finally watched that legendary film "Duck and Cover." Now I understand what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. *ahem*

Thanks, UnixFreak. Just watched a streaming band-aid commercial, comparing them to Brand X. Brand Y and Brand Z. What a flood of memories! I'd long forgotten that in those more staid and circumspect times it was taboo to denigrate your competitors by name.

I still recall my Dad's genuine outrage at a printed Ford pamphlet that unfavorably compared a Chevrolet Station Wagon by name!! Bad form!! Booooooooo!!

Times have kinda' changed, eh?

yeah, I like watching some of those movies from the early 80s, I remember watching that stuff in school, it brings back a lot of memories. I sure dont remember it being that grainy and the people being so goofy! Its great.

My favorite stuff has to be the old war bond propaganda. Some of it is pretty offensive, but it really shows the way things were then, wrong as it may be. Certainly interesting stuff.

Had to post here, just so it'll be easier to find next time! I bookmarked that site, but found it incredibly useful for school. Here I am at school, and the bookmark was at home, and,... well, you can figure out the rest. Took 10 minutes to find this thread.
