Geek or nerd?

Throughout middle school and high school, I always thought of being a nerd as better than being a geek. Now my college friends tell me that a geek is better than a nerd, and I simply can't accept this idea. To me, a geek is a complete social reject who's unkempt and wafer-thin. A nerd is an unusually intelligent person who (usually) takes delight in obscure imaginary or scientific... things (like computers or LOTR or Star Trek). It goes deeper than either of these, of course, but I think these are adequate for quick descriptions.

Was I mistaken for all those years? Is a nerd > a geek or vice versa?

Make new friends and find something else to worry about.

Both are pretty bad to me. But at least nerds have had their own movies "Revenge of the Nerds," so that must be saying something.

To me:

Nerd = thin, wafery, smart, brainy, ATOT'er
Geek = Techie, early adopter, gadget-happy, over-clocker, gamer, ATOT'er

LOL

Their both the same. It's only because of the movie we would think any better of the word "nerd".

Geek = Computer swaavy person
Nerd = scrawny pale kid that can't talk to girls

Both equally suck tho 😛

I think I would fall under this.
But I got friends and all.

To me:
Nerd = social reject who try's to portray himself as knowing more about technology relating things, when he/she him/herself actually knows less than the average person. This "nerd" has few social skills and who would not get a girl in his best dreams. A nerd is the bottom of the ladder socially and technologically.

Geek = and all around smart person who exceeds in what they want to. These "geeks" generally have very good social skills and are usually smarter than the average person. There are also computer geeks who follow this pattern but exceed at computers.

To me a geek is better.

geeks are somethign to be proud of,

i'm geek and proud! 🙂

nerd on the other hand... negative IMO

Nerd is better... at least you're implied to be smart. Geeks are just all around dorks with no good connotation.

I was a geek (lover of obscure things), nerd (smart), jock (athletic) and got laid a lot with the finest girls in skool. 😀

.....It's important to not take yourself too seriously. Have fun. Be amiable. Dress like you respect yourself. Comb your hair. Take a shower. Hit the gym for a bit. Befriend cliques of all sorts. Then go home and play Xbox after doing your homework. Wash your teeth and floss before you go to bed. Say your prayers, eat your vitamins. And don't masterbate....save that for the girl you're taking to the movies on Saturday night. 😉

my fellow geeks and would beg to differ, we quite enjoy the connotation that we're all part of a dedicated omega-cast psudo-lectual counter culture.

Many people in this world are geeks. Many people in this world are nerds. But do the two correlate? recent studies say Yes. That geeks and nerds do correlate.

The two terms have flipped since "Revenge of the Nerds". I dunno if it was that movie, or just a general change due to computers, but geekiness suddenly became ok. Really odd... 😕
