Gee, who would have thought? Transparent and open government....nope.

Gen. Keith B. Alexander admitted that the number of terrorist plots foiled by the NSA’s huge database of every phone call made in or to America was only one or perhaps two — far smaller than the 54 originally claimed by the administration

Yeah - not surprised at all. And how big were these plots? Are they another 9/11 or some idiot who just would have bought supplies from undercover FBI agents anyway? Given the history of the administration and congressional leaders I am going to assume 'terrorist plot' is stretched a bit. Assholes.

People actually believed what obama said?

Kinda like how clinton flipped on free trade.

People running for office lie. They all lie.

There are few things I hate more in this life than pathological liars. I used to work for one. Everything that came out of her mouth was untrue. Whether an outright lie, or a gross exaggeration.

I guess because my beliefs are so strong in this regard is why I just can't reconcile in my mind how so many can worship Barack Obama. He will say anything in an attempt to accomplish what he wants. It's one thing to listen to the lies that come out of him and it's another thing to believe in them. What is accomplished by believing what you know to be a lie?

What happened to our healthcare insurance that would cost as much as a cell phone bill? My insurance is costing $599 a month.

What happened to closing gitmo?

And all the other lies we were told?

But then again clinton said he would not sign free trade agreements.

It's not just Obama. its not just the DNC or the GOP. every fucking politican is like this. they will say anything they think will get them the vote. idiots eat it up because they have been brainwashed into thinking "it's us vs them" and they are willing to do anything to hurt the other party. No matter how badly it hurts the people of the US.

Keep rolling like this OP, using the Moony Times and gotcha politics to attack your political opponents.

Does anyone here really think everything related to national security should be open kimono?

Giving the NSA blank checks to do whatever they want in the name of 'national security' is as naive as giving your college kid a credit card when they say all they are doing is buying school supplies

They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying, lobbying, to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but I’ll tell you what they don’t want:

They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well-informed, well-educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. That’s against their interests.

That’s right. They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around a kitchen table and think about how badly they’re getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago. They don’t want that!

You know what they want? They want obedient workers. Obedient workers, people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork. And just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shitty jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it, and now they’re coming for your Social Security money. They want your retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street—and you know something? They’ll get it.
Mr. George Carlin, 2005

For his reelection campaign, Obama raised a billion dollars. His challenger raised a similar amount.

Anyone that thinks that that money was given without reciprocal expectations is deluding themselves.

If your not one of those entities that contributed to that billion dollars, you're not in the club.

Everyone that has done any work with the so called 'intelligence' agencies knows that a good part of their mission is disinformation. Anyone that thinks that any bureaucrat will put American or ethical considerations above the expansion of their own power is dangerously naive.

Here is a question.
What do you think would happen if you created an organization and every year you gave it billions of dollars and, because it was an 'intelligence' organization, you removed the ability for anyone to audit whether or not that money was being spent productively? And then, every year, for decades, you gave it more money. And you never received an audit of how productive that money was spent. How effective do you think that that organization would be?

Director of National IntelligenceJames R. Clapper denied that the number of plots foiled should be the sole metric by which the success of the program is measured. “I think there’s another metric here that’s very important. … I would call it the ‘peace of mind’ metric.”

/facepalm

Translation: "We know this program really doesn't accomplish anything, but we can pretend it does and that makes simple-minded people feel better."

Keep rolling with your limitless trust in your government....

It's really OK to be skeptical; in fact, it's basically an American ideal, or it used to be anyway.

It's all for your protection thought....it's OK.

IMO, this isn't about transparency; it's about outright lying.

-snip-
Does anyone here really think everything related to national security should be open kimono?

Irrelevant question.

This isn't about protecting national security info; again, it's about outright lying. And Clapper etc aren't politicians, but rather professionals working for us in national security. But you're right, they're acting like politicians and lying. That's a big problem.

The purpose of the NSA information dragnet isn't to foil terrorist plots, but rather to set the stage for a totalitarian state.

Gun control, internet control, cell phone control. When you think about it to a degree it does add up. How would our government deal with a hostile foreign body? Same way right? Disarm the enemy. Monitor all communications. I'm not saying the US gov is going to start declaring marshal law on it's citizens anytime soon. I am saying they are trying to be in the best position they can be if they have to.
