Gecube launches "fastest" AGP, DX10 board to come

CeBIT 007 Life in the old slot yet

By Theo Valich in Hanover: Friday 16 March 2007, 17:51

GECUBE DEMONSTRATED what it claims to be the fastest AGP board to date, the GC-HX195XTGA3-D3.
This board is based on a fully-fledged R580+ GPU, marrketed as the Radeon X1950XT. However, the GPU clock has been changed from default 625MHz to 648MHz - the default clock of the X1950XTX. ATI Overdrive is supported, and this option in the Catalyst driver will increase clock all the way to 675MHz. Memory is not 512MB GDDR4, which is what the X1950XTX has - but rather 256MB of GDDR3 memory. Product manager Jeff Fu saud the firm "will not abandon AGP users".

We asked about the continuing contraction of the AGP market, but were told that the demand for AGP is still very strong. In fact, AGP accounts for the lion's share of some markets.

So for those users that want a AGP perfromance part this company will offer DirectX 10 boards based on RV610 and RV630. In fact, there will even be an overclocked version of the RV630XT, which could even end up cooled by a combined heat-pipe peltier cooler.

Looks like us AGP guys can extend the life of our systems for another 10 months or so.
My quad core el cheapo pci-e system is looking good for the Thanksgiving holiday. Perfect time to upgrade. I'm glad I skipped duel core cpu's and pci-e last year. My system still plays any game made in the past year just fine at 1280x1024. Now if they would only make a game I wanna buy this year, then I'll switch over to quad core, new ram, motherboard, psu and a high end video card for less then a $1000.00 dollars.

low to mid range products yet again for AGP.

Thats funny ..You have a x1950xtx in your rig but a agp x1950xt clocked higher than your card is low to mid performance.

Gecube announced this card last month, but Newegg and TigerDirect still haven't even listed it yet on their website. ><

UK's Ebuyer.com won't ship to the US. ARGH!

I want this card as the final upgrade to my venerable OC'ed P4 Northwood before buying or building a new quadcore/DX10 rig late this year. 1920x1200 gaming on the 6800GT OC'ed is getting painful LOL.

First of all, I was talking about the DX10 parts RV610 and RV630. I challenge you to find a credible source that's going to label RV610 and RV630 "high" end parts. R600 is the high end part. If you think an X1950XT is DX10 then you're mistaken.

Second, what does my X1900XTX have to do with anything? When the current king of the high end (G80) can more than double my frame rates, of course I consider my card mid range.

Launching the "fastest" AGP card is nothing to be proud of. Not when the fastest PCI-E card is over twice as fast.

But unless you have a big monitor it's worthless! A 1950xt will run any game above 50fps at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 with most of the eye candy up. I don't get it. What am I missing? Playing games at 120 fps? I don't see the difference really. In the real world there is no difference. A smooth running game is a smooth running game.

What about when new games come out? Your 50fps in a game like FEAR turns to about 20 fps when a new set of PC games comes out this year.

What about running all the eye candy up and using the highest possible levels of AA?

Are you so confident in the X1950XT AGP that you'll wager money it will post 50fps in Quake Wars or Crysis or Alan Wake at 1280x1024 with the eye candy all the way up and some AA/AF??

I wouldnt even put money on a G80 putting up those numbers.

When these games come out, you'll be waiting around for the nest "fastest AGP card" that will finally give you G80 performance that the PCI-E world has been enjoying for over a year.

I second that, what's up with all the AGP haters? For christ sake, I'm freakin happy as a pig in shi....as I love my X1950 AGP. CoH is running like a charm and STALKER will be in my mailbox this week(FINALLY!!). Gaming goodness, yum yum. As long as I can achieve acceptable frame rates(And I'm sure I will) for Crysis, Quake Wars, Alan Wake, Bioshock, HL2 EP2, UT3, Dragon Age, Front Lines, etc.etc....I'm more than happy, as I don't need to crank my games all the way up in order to enjoy them. If I can squeeze out another year without rebuilding my entire rig, that's another plus. And if any of these DX10 cards for AGP end up kicking some serious arse, than Ebay will surely take my 1950 off me for a small exchange for a new card.

I'm glad companies aren't abandoning the AGP bus, as so many people out there are still hanging on......

Whats the price premium of an X1950pro AGP over an X1950pro PCI-e??

we sell most AGP X1950Pro's for about AU$25 more than the PCI-E variant's....not much of a premium at all.

Heres a clip of system requirements for Quake wars. I'll easily play this with my 7800gs. 1950pro owners looks like they get most of the eye candy. 1950xt owners get all eye candy?

Minimum System Requirements
Operating System: Windows 98/2000/ME/XP
Processor: Pentium PIII 800 MHz Processor or AMD Athlon
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 2? or ATI Radeon? 7000 or higher
CD-ROM: 4X or Faster
RAM: 256 MB RAM

Recommended System Requirements
Operating System: Windows XP
Processor: CPU Pentium 4 2.4GHz or Athlon64 3000
Video Card: Geforce FX 5700 or Radeon 9600 or higher
CD-ROM: CDRom 52x or DVD Rom 16x
RAM: 512 MB RAM

A little snip for Alan Wake.

"What kind of specs will the PC need to run Alan Wake?"

"Nothing is certain about the specifications but you will need Windows Vista and a fairly high spec PC. Remedy have showcased Alan Wake running smoothly on an Intel Core 2 Quad system overclocked at 3.73Ghz with a GeForce 7900GTX."

Markus from Remedy has said ?Alan Wake would pretty much not run on any single core processors, although it may be possible to run on single-core Pentium 4 processors with Hyper Threading enabled, with noticably reduced image quality/experience.?

The game will use a separate processing thread dedicated to physical calculations. Since Remedy is using Havok, there is no support for Ageia PhysX cards, so all the physical calculations are done using the CPU. Markus has explained that a normal Core 2 Quad will use 80% of one core for physical calculations."

Alan Wake we won't see till early 2008. I''ll have a cheap quad core system to run it by then. And you can upgrade (again) your duel core system to run a quad core game.
Seems duel core system are pretty much getting skippped over. Don't worry I understand your pain.

Recommended Requirements

CPU: Dual-core CPU (Athlon X2/Pentium D)
Graphics: Nvidia 7600 or ATI X1600 Pro (SM 3.0) or DX10 equivalent

Ya, sure. Like a GeForce 7600GS/GT or a Radeon X1600 Pro is gonna run this game at 30+ FPS at 1600x1200.

I have 2 512MB BFG GeForce 7950GTs in SLI mode and I probably have to play Crysis at 800x600 to get most of the eye-candy and 30+ FPS!

WoW, then it means i can play CRYSIS with my old 9800PRO too?

hmm, i wonder what my rig (in sig) will get...hopefully 1024x768, possibly 1280x1024. im willing to turn down any effects for resolution.

The regular X1950 XT 256MB (625/1800) is pretty equal a 1900 XT 512MB in performance, thus this card should "only" be slightly faster due to 23MHz higher core frequency - also remember that the X1950 XTX has 200 MHz higher memory frequency.

Still the fastest card for the AGP folks!

Edit
Those Crysis requirements are pulled out of the author's ass:
current speculated specs

I've seen the X1950XT AGP on Ebuyer for under £150

Seems good bang for the buck, and good to hear than DX10 parts will be available on AGP also.
