GeCube 1950 Pro 256MB drivers

I recently decided to build a new system that was quite an upgrade from my last and one of the things that changed was the fact that I went from a familiar and steady NVidia AGP platform to an unfamiliar and apparently unsteady ATI PCI-e platform (the wave of the future, yeah right!) Anyway so I build this new system:

MSI K9N Platinum
Athlon 64 x2 3800 am2
GeCube 1950 Pro 256MB PCI-e
2GB Patriot PC6400 800MHz DDR2
580W Hiper PSU

Everything goes together without a hitch (didn't even need special drivers for XP to recognize my SATA drives, very nice). So I'm installing drivers and get to the video, put the CD in and perform the "Express" installation (thinking even if these are crummy I'll get the update once everything is working right) and that's where I hit the wall. As soon as the drivers for vid card are installed XP asks me to reboot (OK, standard so far) I bounce the system and as soon as I log in the machine goes into a "reboot loop" that, as far as I could tell, could only be broken by going into Safe Mode. OK, driver issue (something I hear ATI and it's vendors are notorious for). I remove the driver and go to GeCube's website to get the newest one (7.2 I think) and now the screen just looks like hell (resolution is totally screwed up). I have tried probably 3 or 4 different drivers but cannot seem to get this card to work.

Please tell me I didn't buy a lemon! All the reviews said that this was an incredible card for the money and the benchmarks would agree so why is it so tricky to get working? I don't know a thing about the catalyst control center aside from the fact that everyone seems to hate it but if the driver doesn't work then I am not even getting that far. I have to admit I must have been spoiled as all of the NVidia cards I have ever purchased I just plug the card in download the latest drivers from their website, install them, bounce the box and I am ready to go. This so far has been a nightmare. I started with a clean install of XP but I have probably already screwed it up with all of the drivers and other things that have come with them like "Hydravision", etc. that by the time I finally figure out what I really need to do I'll probably have to re-install XP again just to get things cleaned up right.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I can get this thing working or am I going to have to RMA it back to NewEgg and buy an NVidia card after all?

Thanks.

first mistake was installing the drivers off the cd. who knows how old they were. secondly you might want to try using a driver cleaner, instead of just installing the 7.2s over the old drivers. (which i assume you did). and in the future, i'd recommend getting the dirvers directly from ati Text
