Wait what? 3rd person over the shoulder ground breaking 2006? Yea Gears wasn't a ground breaker w/ 3rd person shooters atleast not for its over the shoulder view. I'd like you to check out some older games rofl.
Furthermore the thing that made gears groundbreaking was the significance of hop n pop gun fights and the body explosions, and making a shotgun actually require skill.
I'd wager I've been playing games far longer than yourself.

But you knew what I meant...
As one of the first games to offer the contextual cover taking mechanic. The ability to "stick" to cover, and slide between cover.
Obviously it wasn't the first 3rd person shooter. Hell, the first Rainbow Six could be played in 3rd person. But the Gears style was still quite new and exciting in '06.
It has since been done by countless other games. Not as well, usually, but that entire style of predictable waves of enemies, open courtyards with convenient waist-high concrete barriers, etc. I'm just just burnt out on it.
For the record, I've purchased every single GoW on launch day too, so I think I'm a pretty decent fan of the series.
