maybe that's the new tactic against pirates. inflate the size of games to max out the pirate's data packages :D

If pirates could crack it they would compress the crap out of it and even legal customers would download the compressed torrent.

Because they know that you'll buy it the second you play the trial.

Needs all those massive textures of rubble, debris, and other brown/gray blobs. Probably lossless audio or just straight-up WAV files for all that amazing dialogue, too. Sorry, I can't help but poke fun at GoW, it's just so... not my cup o' tea.

The cracked version is 76GB, so you could save yourself a few minutes.

^^ There is no cracked version of Gears of War 4.

As for why the game is so large, you can thank the multiplayer maps and the hi resolution textures.

Do you notice a difference even at a lower resolution than 4k if you don't have a 4k monitor yet ?

Just give it some time for companies to figure out how to compress them down to a reasonable size. I realize 1TB SSDs are available, but I certainly hope developers don't expect us to eventually have a 10TB SSD just to play video games in the future.

Then again, maybe this is their way of trying to move away from digital downloading and move back to physical copies. I remember how fun it was installing F.E.A.R with its 6 discs at 17GB. If the conversion is still true of 1 disc per 2.8GBs, then we would only need a measly 37 discs to install Gears of War 4.

nah, with BluRay you can fit 100GB on 1 disc.

i think a more intelligent approach would be to allow the user to choose which texture pack they want to download. that way, 1080p users don't have to download GBs of 4K textures.

My guess: Crappy console cores make games loose performance if they have to unpack textures on the fly so unpacked it is for everybody, nobody cares about PC anymore... :(

I think this was the case with X360's final day where some games featured additional hi-res cutscenes that you have to download. i think it was the case with battlefield 3. of course that was a problem for those pirating the game on consoles but if the game can be download, so can the updates. didn't really took pirates long to crack and upload that too and desperate gamers to find it out.
