Gear questions for manual transmission cars

Why is it that you can be rolling backward and shift into first gear with no problem, but if you are moving at all forward you cannot shift into reverse?

because the first (and all forward-moving gears) have synchros while the reverse gear does not.

You can do anything you want... if the clutch is depressed.

Some cars have syncros on reverse, some do not. You must be driving one without.

If I have my clutch pushed in, I cannot shift into reverse while moving forward unless I want to grind my gears up.

I guess my car (1989 Probe) does not have syncros.

Like everyone said, they have synchros so you don't chew up your gears when you put your car into reverse while it's going forward.

I have driven '87 Sundance, '94 Escort, '02 Civic. All of them bitch if you try to put it in reverse if you're moving forward because of the synchros.

No synchros on a gear means you grind while shifting if the car is in motion.

Basically, when you shift a car into reverse, gears have to move past each other; Different scenario then when shifting forward gears. B/C of this, it is harder to shift a car into reverse.

While the synchros have a lot to do with it, some of the reason lies in the fact that reverse gears are straight cut, while forwards gears are helical cut.

The straight cut gears are also what give out the little whine when you back up real fast.
