Gear intermittently sticks in 3rd

I have a 2002 Subaru Forester and once in a while going from 2nd to 3rd gear, the lever will stick - I then drop it to neutral, wait a sec then it goes into 3rd fine. It has been happening rarely over the past month or so, but it happened a few times today. The car has ~78k miles on it.

Uhm...maybe the synchros are wearing?

By stick, do you mean it won't push up into third? Like, you leave second, row through neutral, and then it catches something while grabbing third?

Any noises?

will it literally just not go? or is there just resistance?

it could definately be a worn synchro. when you put it into neutral and wait a sec, do you let the clutch pedal out? my car has a similar issue with second (definately a worn synchro for me), and i generally get around it by double clutching if needed. if that helps, i would definately vote synchro.

Honestly, before you go digging around with rebuilds and crap it could be something as simple as the shifter not being properly reassembled after the clutch was replaced.

I had a problem in my Legacy where it was wouldn't shift out of 5th. Turns out it was caused by a washer I installed backwards during a short shifter install, 3 YEARS earlier.

And I do agree with brblx. See if double-clutching has any effect on the problem.

What I see a lot of times when people going into 3rd is that since it's a longer shift, people won't hold their clutch in long enough and there ya go.

if you want to rule out a linkage issue, just try and find the levers on the tranny and observe them as someone shifts. as long as each one (should be two) is fully engaging each position, you should be fine. if you can't tell if a lever is going all the way, disconnect the linkage and note the travel while moving it with your hand.

a cable setup can be checked the same way, and should also have some way to adjust at least one cable, maybe both.

Most of the time, problems getting into gear are related to either clutch wear or cable/hydraulic adjustment preventing the clutch from disengaging completely. It's also unlikely that you will develop a problem with a third gear synchro before first or second.

Yes, it wont push into third. I encounter some resistance, so I dont muscle it into third, figured that would be bad. I dont hear any noises.

Also, I'm not letting go of the clutch, when I move it back to neutral and try again for 3rd it goes right in.

Thanks for the suggestions.
