Hi Everyone,

I am building a secondary gaming machine (nothing too fancy) & saw this video card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130625

My Main machine currently has this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130750

My question is, are these 2 cards practically the same or is the 550 better? When I look at some benchmarks, it shows the 550 being about 47% better. Also would the 560 be better on video converting? When I looked at the cuda core count, the 460 had higher, but I wasn't sure if that really meant anything since the other numbers were higher on the 550?

Thanks

Where? GTX460 will smoke the 550Ti in games.

Geforce GTX 460 v2 1GB (192-bit) = 98 performance rating
Radeon HD 7770 1GB (DX11.1) -- 93 performance rating
Geforce GTX 550 Ti 1GB (DX11) -- 78 performance rating

If you can find the 460 V2 for $105, it's way better than the 550Ti.

GTX460 1GB isn't in that chart, but its performance is near HD6850:

For video transcoding, you are better off getting an Intel Core i series CPU if you don't care for image quality (NV and AMD are just as bad). If you care about image quality, CPU is the only way to go.

This article compares the image quality and performance to QuickSync with GPUs on the market in various programs. Performance really depends on the application you use:
http://techreport.com/articles.x/23324

Conclusion: "For the time being, the best option for quick, high-quality video transcoding is unfortunately to buckle down, get yourself a fast CPU, and run the best software encoder you can find (which may be Handbrake). If performance matters to you more than quality, then using QuickSync in MediaConverter might be a suitable option."

The GTX550Ti is a poor option in the first place since HD7770 costs $105 , is faster and consumes a lot less power than the 550Ti and has similarly poor quality video transcoding :)

Ok I feel stupid. I was comparing a 560 TI to the 460.

This was the site, that I was looking at

http://www.hwcompare.com/9691/geforce-gtx-460-1gb-vs-geforce-gtx-550-ti/

When I select the correct ones (I think they are) then the site is on par with everything else that has been posted

That website just takes theoretical performance and compares it. That's not very useful. Don't pay attention to that.

If you want to spend $105-110, HD7770 Ghz edition for $105 is going to better than the GTX560SE since it uses less power with similar performance. If you want to spend $125-130, just get a standard GTX560.

EVGA Superclocked 560 = $130

The 550Ti shouldn't even exist. Its only purpose is to fool unsuspecting consumers into thinking that nVidia has a video card worth buying under $120.

You can't get a GTX 560 for $130 you are wrong and we are not going on FAIL IN REBATES those are for suckers. The GTX 560 you linked is a $160 dollar card end of story.

Ya they really failed on the naming of the 550ti specifically the ti moniker should be dropped from that card as it indicates the card has some balls which is not that case. The 550ti is a decent card for no more than $100.

I would agree. When I see 460 & 550, my first thought would be that the 550 would be better then the 460 (also looking at the Lettering they also use i.e. GE, GTX, etc)

In regards to rebates, so far I have lucked out when submitting for rebates, but usually I like to have a cheap out of pocket cost up front for the most part.
