Enter GDDR6. This is the memory standard that will take us to the 2020 and beyond, i.e. third decade of the 21st century. GDDR6 is being built with a lot of changes and accent on the driving silicon, that we expect this part to last, if not outlast the GDDR3 memory, which launched in 2004 and still makes for vast majority of GDDR memory shipments.

Whats so special about gddr6 that is going to make it last for 6+ years?

Presumably, they are going to design a bus with a lot of upward scalability, so that in the future there won't be new GDDR versions, just new chips that run a little faster. I'd expect GDDR6 to use differential signaling. If the interface they use allow for increasing the signal clock without increasing the ram clock, and for enough banks, they might well make this one last a long time.

Another factor is that 3d integration will possibly make traditional memory interfaces go the way of the dodo -- it might last 6+ years simply because there will never be need for a successor.

In the future, go ahead and start a new one instead. This thread is almost 2 years old.

As for GDDR6, haven't heard another word about it.
