GDC: Nintendo Boss Satoru Iwata Keynote Speech

Queasy

Moderator<br>Console Gaming
Rumors are floating that Iwata will make some announcements about new games for the Wii, WiiWare, Virtual Console, and DSi among other things. The Wii Shop Channel is currently down for maintenance but it will come back up in time for the speech supposedly.

Joystiq will have a liveblog as will 1Up. Kotaku liveblog. Gamespot

I'll post other sources as they become available.

Update: Pics of Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks from MTV Multiplayer. Joystiq

Wii Menu 4.0 Walkthrough

Prediction: For the Wii: more mini-games, more gimmicky Wii-Fit type deals, probably another Mario/Zelda/Metroid rehash with Wii-Waggle tacked on, etc.

For the DS, probably Nintendogs 2 and another Pokemon game.

Sigh...I miss the old Nintendo that actually made good games and didn't push gimmicky shovelware. 🙁

Now that's a shot. Iwata notes that the Wii Balance Board install base is closing in on the PS3 install base.

They are showing off a new game called Rock & Roll Climber for WiiWare that uses the balance board with the Wii-mote and nunchuk to 'simulate' rock climbing.

Now showing the Wii's new menu system (4.0) and storage solution. The Wii will support SD cards up to 32GB! You can download games to and launch games directly from the SD card now.

Available now.

A new Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles game called "My Life as a Darklord" announced. Sequel to My Life as a King.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years announced for WiiWare.

Final Fantasy announced for Virtual Console.

This is actually a good idea...too bad a 32 GB SD card costs about $100, bringing the total cost of a Wii with a decent storage solution up to...$350, just as expensive as a Premium XBOX 360.

Oops, Nintendo! Looks like rebranded GameCubes with gimmicky controls don't provide the "best customer value" at all...

Square-Enix...just die already. Please. Stop whoring out your beloved franchises to try and make a quick buck.

Liked the original, so I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully they don't do DLC like the first one, though - microtransaction hell.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years announced for WiiWare.
I'm sad that there's no Before Crisis release, but this is nice!

Final Fantasy announced for Virtual Console.
Whatever. I think folks will be disappointed in FF1... it didn't age terribly well. The PSP and GBA remakes were much better. Now, 4 and 6 are still pretty good, so those, at least, might be worth looking at.

WarioWare Snapped announced for the DSi. Expect to have goofy pictures of yourself taken.

Virtual Console Arcade for the Wii announced and launching today. Starring Space Harrier, Gaplus, Star Force, Solvalou, The Tower of Druaga, Mappy and more.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks announced for the DS. Link gets to engineer a train with a canon mounted on it?

And Iwata's keynote closes with that.

How are these games? Can you play these single player and get the same amount of enjoyment out of them? Could I have my non-gamer fiance play it with me? Is there online play with this? (talking about the GC and the Wii ones)

So, will this be FF4 gameplay type? or is it going to just use the stories and characters and make it crappy?

boooo, gimme FF2,3,4 and Chrono Trigger!!!!!

Its too bad they couldnt come out with a more elegant SD solution - it took him a full minute to load the game.

Honestly, as far as I can tell, the Wii is host to the slowest SD card reader ever known to man. The amount of time it takes to copy a megabyte to or from it is absolutely absurd.

amen to that. just copying the save games back and forth is painful. these things are tiny, wtf is taking so long.

still wondering why they have to lock save games... sigh.

Should be obvious - the SD reader is so existentially slow that it would cause issues in games whenever it tried to write to the save file (which can be very often).

It's single-player only, at least for the currently-released one.

It _looks_ like a slightly-updated FF4. FWIW, I didn't think FF4 was the pinnacle of gameplay - it could be improved on, and was.

boooo, gimme FF2,3,4 and Chrono Trigger!!!!!
FF2 and FF3 never got released in the US on the NES or SNES, so I wouldn't expect to see them on VC... ever. Chrono Trigger is a possibility, I suppose.

My mistake, I was referring to the US releases. I really meant Final Fantasy V and Finaly Fantasy VI. Any chance of those making their way to VC?

Chrono Trigger was re-released for the DS. It sells for around $37, which is much more than the prices that Nintendo normally charges for VC games, so I don't see it happening.

I did a bit of research, and found then FF4: The After Years is actually a sequal to FF4. Square didnt develop it, but they did publish it (obviously).
