GC Mem card in Wii

Is there a way to format the GC memory card? i'm trying to save my game in mario kart double dash and it says the card is damaged. does it mean physical damage or just like screwed up with formatting or something?

i can go into the card and see my saved games from other games ok.

should i try deletiing the old MK: DD save and see if it works?
