GB Network Running at only 7mbps?

Quick overview,

10/100 router -----> 10/100/1000 Switch ------> multiple PC's with GB nic's

Why am I only getting 7-10mbps throughput on file transfers between machines? I don't understand the bottleneck tbh although the y are mostly vista boxes and although I understand how the network stack is so redesigned now. All cables are CAT5e, which I thought was supposedly acceptable for gb networks, though perhaps I should really lay out on some CAT6. Nevertheless they used to get better throughput and nothing has really changed hardware or software wise. All we have done is moved house .... something in the air? (joke btw!)

Are these store bought patch cables or handmade?

It could be the cable or you have a duplex mismatch. Make sure all the cards are set to autonegotiate speed and duplex.

Yeah they were some of the 1st checks I did. But have just checked again the 2 handmade and the others are store bought. Testing connection between the machines with the handmade ones is actually higher... 9-13mb. Testing the others its only 7-10....

But yeah I checked all the settings of the nics themselves, next step I guess is to see if there are any later drivers for them all than the Vista supplied ones, and I'll try switching off ipv6 on all the boxes.

If it's set to autoneg did you check to see what it is actually getting from the switch? Sometimes it will autoneg to a lower speed. Personally, I have more success setting it to 1000/full but that's just me. Also might want to try a disk-> disk copy local on a couple machines and make sure they can actually transfer data faster than what you're seeing.
