Orang-utans can swing both ways

A SCIENTIST has observed homosexual behaviour in wild orang-utans for the first time, adding the great apes to the long list of animals that take part in same sex relationships.

The two pairs of male orang-utans were spotted in the jungles of Sumatra by Dr Elizabeth Fox, a researcher from the Wildlife Conservation Society, based at the Bronx Zoo, New York. Their encounters were short-lived, but mimicked many of the rituals of male-female mating.

Homosexual behaviour has been observed in almost every species of animal including dolphins, hedgehogs, kangeroos, sheep, whales, albatrosses, chimpanzees and gorillas. Dr Fox published her observations in the American Journal of Primatology.

Orang-utans, the only great apes native to Asia, are largely solitary. Males and females live separate lives and normally only interact when the females are ready to mate.

During her long-term study, Dr Fox observed only four homosexual orang-utans suggesting that the behaviour is rare. All four were males, two of them sexually mature, and two adolescents.

The male adolescents took part in playful intimate sexual behaviour several times over a couple of days, she said. The older couple had just one sexual encounter.

Previously, homosexual behaviour had only been witnessed among captive orang-utans or rehabilitated animals that had been in close contact with people.

Actually, orangutans are apes, not monkeys. But, apes and monkeys are both primates.

well bonobos are wacky.. they are like all bi.. screwing is for social reasons, and the only other primate besides us that screw face to face sometimes. the funny thing is that they have very low violence rate, their very close relatives chimpanzees don't do this and are very violent gotta love it.

Male-on-male rape has been observed in nature for centuries. This is nothing earth shattering. Male rape is about domination, a primitive and brutal act of subverting the leadership role in communal arrangements. It has nothing to do with sexual gratification.

It is interesting to note that a large number of gay men have reported their "first sex act with a male" to have been with them as the victim of a rape by an older male. So perhaps in some cruel and perverted way this scientist may be reporting a self-revelation by making this observance.

bonobos do it as kiss and make up behavior too, so how is that subversion eh? or just for fun sometimes it seems.

i'm sure most women that get raped eventually develop an undying facination and love for rapists.
