GAWD......some people have such an overinflated sense of value of their cars........

So, see a '93 Tempo FS......paint in poor shape (faded and scratched up in places), body fair shape (I'm being charitable.....dented up in places and rust bubbles around trunk lid), needs front end work (tie rods at least), A/C that might or might not work, interior dirty (needs a "good shampooing"), 2.4L 4cyl, 5spd, 157K miles.............KBB and Edmunds put private party value at $400-$430 (say $450 to be nice), which in that shape is reasonable.

"I'm asking $1200 because I just put $XXX into it repairing brakes, etc., etc., and I want to get my money back out of it."

Guess what....you just sunk $500 or whatever into a $400 car doing maintenance and made that car worth.....TADA!!!.... $400-$430. Doing maintenance does NOT raise the value of a car.....it's MAINTENANCE........sorry!

So I basically offered him $375 for it.....and got laughed at in my face. Granted, I can get repairs done for uber cheap to free, but that still doesn't negate the fact the car's a pile of steaming dog poo..........and worth about that, too.

Haha. People, they're the worst. When looking at a boat one time the seller told us he was asking $7000 for it and was very firm because that's what he needed out of it to pay his daughter's tuition. Nevermind the fact that the boat was trashed and not worth that much.

The correct term is depreciation.

Yes, people have skewed views on value, in all walks of life.

Though, it has much to do with the room they have to maneuver when bargaining.

I have a feeling you will be hearing back from him in awhile. As long as it takes for him to learn nobody wants to buy that POS for that much money. Sit back and wait for the call (assuming he has your number or contact info).

Yup, and when he does call back, lowball him.

yeap it dont surprise me.

I own part of a car dealership (like 25% heh my dad owns the rest) but i work on the lot every now and then (I'm a crappy salesmen!). it amazes me what people expect to get for there car on trade in.

We just took in a 83 delta 88 (think that is it) that had 120k miles and a big dent in the back. The lady just put in a new tranny and brake job. She wanted $2k for it! we were nice but there was NO way we would pay even a quarter of that. just not worht it.

But this happens nearly every day! heaven forbid a kid with a riced out car comes in! just because you sink 5-10k in in don't make it worth an extra 10k!

heh yea, sinking money into a car doesn't up the worth, its just that before a certain point, you can't really buy a car thats equiv for what its worth...not something you've always owned and babied etc...no other people dirt etc. the repair upped the value in that persons mind, nothing else...too bad they aren't self aware i guess 🙂

yea, the car would have to be free without the maintenance..
