Just heard a story on the news that something like half of Colorado's Uber drivers didn't have licenses! Switching something else seems like a good idea.

Why do I feel that someone with a problem for these driverless vehicles will homebrew some device that causes the vehicles to fail horribly.

I've only ever used Lyft but maybe only 2 or 3 times at that. The principle of "the sharing economy" is a complete joke and honestly should be banned.

Wat.

I heard Uber basically skipped the entire concept of a background check for the whole state, so I guess that scans. Lyft didn't have any issues though.

Seems to me if Lyft can just make sure their drivers make a decent wage then they are set. Uber is going to implode at this rate. I know people who did and do drive for Uber, and they all pretty much hate it.

Uber let people drive for them with suspended and revoked licenses. So call an Uber, possibly get a serial DUI or red-light-runner to add a little excitement to your trip.

I may have heard a "percent" that wasn't there. I.e. I heard "Over 50 percent of drivers", when the number was 58 or so drivers.

"Maryland was set to implement a regulation that would require Uber drivers to submit to fingerprint-based background checks, but later eased up on the proposal. The state later found that 4,000 drivers didn’t meet state screening requirements. A similar situation unfolded in Massachusetts, which found more than 8,000 drivers who should’ve been disqualified from driving for the companies had actually passed Uber and Lyft background checks, including 51 sex offenders."

Lyft failed backgrounds in MA, as per Ken's link.

I hear you though. On the plus side, that money you save from avoiding regular cabs should help off set the cost of the needed helmet and a Doberman.

Had to go away from Uber tonight and use Lyft. Ordered an Uber and then watched him drive away from me in the opposite direction for 10 minutes and then stop. Called and texted the dude with no response. Canceled and found the fare had gone up 20% due to a surge. Went into Lyft, fare was lower than original Uber rate, and a nice, new, black Suburban with an extremely professional driver pull up. Ride was awesome and gave him a generous tip.

Guess I'll try Lyft more often.

No problem using Lyft with Google voice#.
Surprised tipping is in hard amounts (ie: $2, $5, other) instead of % (ie: 10%, 15%, other)

Right, so instead we should have local based taxi monopolies that charge 5k to get a taxi license.

Which as we all know, the fine art of being a taxi driver requires the skill of... driving. You know, that thing every human does....

All I can say is fuck taxis and their monopoly. They enjoyed their cushy life, I remember the days of having to call a taxi company and scheduling a pickup instead of just using a simple app... oh and God forbid you had to use a company credit card with the taxi...

Honestly I've never really had a need for these types of services, I think it's a neat idea as competition is a good thing, but I always just call a cab when I need one. Not even sure if we even have Uber or Lyft here. Probably not as that stuff tends to be more down south.

Red, some cities, or more appropriately, suburbs around where I live don't have taxi cab firms/companies. And the suburb I live in is tied to a city I work in that believes one must transport one's self by their own personal vehicle as mass transit is a joke. The idea of taking a taxi cab is nonsense in this design and in the suburb I'm in the only taxi cabs are independents of the Latin variety (catering to the poor Latin population). And these independents are out numbered by 10:1 or more by the Uber drivers, and probably 3:1 by the Lyft drivers.

Now, if these independent taxi cab operators had a means to be readily available for me to use then ... but that ain't going to happen anytime soon.

Interesting, I always assumed cabs were pretty much everywhere. Even in my small city there are like 2-3 cab companies. But yeah if there are places with no service I can see how these 3rd party ride sharing programs would be a benefit in those places.

Here in Bellevue, WA the cab company I've used since last century has gone way way downhill in the last year or two. A couple of weeks ago I called an hour ahead for a ride to an eye exam and they never found me a driver. I guess it's time to switch to Lyft.
