This past December, my 83 year old uncle had a serious medical incident that, thank goodness, was relatively short-lived and he was able to mostly recover from. However, with some encouragement from his doctor, my parents and myself, he agreed to sell his car (he was never a good driver anyway) and move into an assisted living facility (about 1 mile from my house - I am the only local relative. His apartment was much further away from my house).

Today, I turned in the key for the one-bedroom rent-controlled bungalow apartment he lived in for 45 freakin' years. I remember the place from when we would visit in the summers starting when I was about 5 years old.

My parents lived in our house for 39 years, but he beat them by 6 years.

What is the longest one of your family members lived in the same place?

It hasn't been contiguous, but there's been family in this house since 64 or so. My father died in 2000.

My uncle is something of a hoarder, though very neat and organized about it. There were boxes and boxes of everything having to do with his work (he retired in 1992) and all his travels dating back into the 1960's. It took us four full days of work with 3-5 adults to go through everything with him and move it out.

We are having a HUGE garage sale next weekend with mostly his stuff (from a one bedroom apartment).

not too long, parents still have the house from 1984. My brother and I bought houses in the same town too - good schools so we stayed. At one point mom mentioned she would just give it to one of us but neither wanted it. Personally I don't like splits.

My grandma recently moved out of her house. My dad was born and raised there, so she was in there for at least 60 years. The move happened so suddenly, I'm sure it was really sad for her to leave her home. She has mobility troubles so she had to be moved to a home. My great grandma was also moved to a home years ago. It's sad to see my grandparents slowly getting to that age but it's life.

My grandma has been in her house a long time. My mom was 11 when they moved there, so 1964. So 49 years give or take. We've been gently trying to prod her into moving to a seniors complex as she's having trouble taking care of the place, but she refuses to move. I've debated taking it over but no way in hell I'd live in Brampton. That city is ghetto, plus car insurance is through the roof there.

My grandpa who is 87 has lived in two houses his whole life. The second house, they (him and my grandma) have lived there for more than 50 years. He sold the first house when he was 75 or so as he wanted to get out of the rental business.

You guys are depressing me. I feel bad for these old people who have to leave their homes they lived in so long. So many memories there. Getting old sucks.

I think the longest anyone in my family stayed put is my Mom for 20 years. But she'll probably keep that place till she dies.

I notoriously move constantly. Between one and two years. I finish a house and always want something better or different. I gotta stop doing that. I need to stay put. I'm sick of moving. And I love my new house where I'm at now. 3 stories, 3000 sqft, and views of the river. All for myself. This should really be the house I stay in. Maybe adopt kids (screw marriage).

Out of curiosity, what was his rent frozen at, compared to comparable places in the area?

My father in-law is 85. He lives in the house that he was born in. A family farm that his grandfather settled and built. He still farms the land.

Was he single all his life ? One bedroom apartment is not large enough to raise a family

Damn, your uncle's been renting in the LA area for 45 years? They have some sort of rent control so he could continue with the $100 a month rent that he probably started out with? :)

And anyways, my grandmother has been in the same house since she bought it in 1949.
