Gave out my SS# by accident

Senior member
I got a new cc last week and today got an email saying that someone's been using that card...it was a chase rewards card. I acutally went to chase.com to check first but I put in my social security # in the bs site anyway to 'log in'. Well then they wanted my cc# and name, etc next and I realized I made a big mistake so i closed it....

Should i be worried that they have my ss#? is there anything i should do?

I would get a credit report every month for at least 6 months to see.
Also e-mail the CC compnay your link and what happened.

Since your SSN# is basically public record I wouldn't be worried.

At my Driver's Ed we had to check a box to NOT get our SS # as our driver's license number. I'm paranoid and opted to have differing numbers.

What state do you live in that gives SSN# as your default drivers ID #?

at virginia tech out student ids were our SS#s untill senior year were you had the option to change it.

Would it be a good idea to put a fraud alert? They don't have my name or any other information about me (that i know of)....

They used to use SS#'s as our id back in my university too....

Oklahoma, but perhaps it was the class itself. When we signed the papers to get the permits there was a little box you had to check if you didn't want the SS# to be the permit/license number. Instead of every kid going to the bureau to get the permit the teacher did all of them at once. It could very well be it's just the class and not OK's real default.

Most kids couldn't tell you the names of 4 planets in the Solar System, so I wasn't too surprised by it.

Interesting. I guess it does make keeping databases on the same page much easier.

If I understand your OP, you entered your SSN on a bogus site, then stopped? In that case they don't even know your name, address, CC number, or anything else.

For them to have a SSN and no way to connect it to someone, is harmless.
