Before Steam, there were services that would monitor Gamespy and list how many people were currently playing x game online at the current moment. It worked well for most online games which supported Gamespy (except the ones that had the option of bots).
I still have a fascination with knowing what are the most popular games currently but I find these numbers hard if not impossible to gather.
Steam does an excellent job of reporting these numbers for the top 100 games
http://store.steampowered.com/stats/
But they only are accurate if the game requires Steam. Games that are Origin exclusive, BattleNet and the other services can not be measured because no statistics are reported (at least that I know of). Also, there are many games that can run both on Steam and Origin and in that case, the reported numbers for those game on Steam are not accurate.
Do any of the other networks besides Steam report numbers which can give you an idea of the popularity of games?
