Are they better than what gets sold at the hardware store(Korkys and Fluidmasters)?

One flapper got vandalized by a vindictive person and upon inspection, the flapper happened to have Gatorskin on it.

According to their manufacturer, "This Gatorskin flapper is made of high-quality anitoxidant material to resist chloramine and harsh water conditions".
They are less than $5, but to answer your question, if the cheaper ones worked for you before, they still will and if you clean the tank once in a while any flapper will work.

Does it really matter? I just replaced a generic no-name flapper that was in service for 15 years. Once every 15 years is pretty good. I used a Korky replacement.

I brought a Korky that was manufactured in the USA to place in the toilet the Gatorskin was installed in. The difference in size is small but substantial, as the Korky is slightly smaller such that it doesn't cover the same area as the Gatorskin and I can see the white plastic of the drain mechanism. It barely covers the hole of the flush valve.

Not to get off topic but…

What kind of vindictive person thinks, "Your toilet flapper shall be my revenge!"

It’s a way for the possessor of the property to inflict financial damage to the owner without any penalty as bathrooms are a private space where cameras cannot be installed legally.

As long as the person has a brain and no ethics, it can come from anyone well versed in landlord-tenant laws.
The suspect for this toilet was a Nigerian.

Another person in a different location was even more subtle. Pulled out the internal underneath halfway out. This was a Mensa woman of Jewish background.
