Gateway vs Router?

I'm new this technology of networking. Before I had one computer and a modem.

Recently, I called my phone company and they are going to give me a Kit and start my DSL service later in the week. Now I have 2 computers in my house.
Can someone tell me the difference between a router and gateway? plus their advatages? Is wireless good considering I have one computer on the upstairs level and one downstairs? I need a wireless NIC right?

Thanks

A gateway is your IP address of the machine you access the internet from...a router essentially finds the gateway and also routes information to the computers on your LAN. If you use a Gateway you will most likely be using ICS in Windows but personally I prefer a Router ALOT more reliable also most have built in Firewalls
