Gateway Solo 5300 LCD problem

Here is my problem. I got a refurbed LCD for this laptop to replace a cracked one and I can't see anything on it unless it's a really light color and that's only part of the time. Could this be the inverter, backlight, or some other problem? Is there a way to test the inverter? Thanks for any help you can give.
