I ordered my server friday, total $608 with tax/shipping. I called today to talk to the rep in my email about the price and what other people have gotten he was frustrated and It seems has been dealing with this since he stepped in the door this morning..

Be warned because he stated that this was a known issue, that there had been a department email sent out to the matter and that all reps who had accepted coupons where having there commissions on these servers stripped and possible more depending on the level/amount of discounting that went on.

He also stated that at this time gateway was considering dropping all orders with ANY other coupons applied, statement being - Our system is not supposed to allow more then one price/coupon reduction, for some reason it did not see the $400 price reducute as such which was wrong -

He then stated that the $45 shipping was for home systems, servers are $60 and all orders under $560 ( $500 base + $60 shipping ) Would be under review and due to the mass number of orders, cancelled outright since there would be to many manhours trying to contact everyone to resolve these orders.

Here's the crappy part about all this..

Who's fault is it:
Gateway's.

Who's going to get shafted:
All multi-coupon users.

Don't ya love it when companies don't make their policies clear up-front? If it wasn't permitted people shouldn't have been able to do it in the first place. Oh well.

I am all for getting great deals, but there is a limit, and they do state upfront

** Prices and configurations subject to change without notice or obligation. Prices exclude shipping and handling and taxes. **

This deal has also been removed from there website, you can not order this online and get the $400 off anymore.

But then I guess if one of you make a mistake and post you are willing to sell your system for $100 instead of $1000 you should STICK to your price even though you made a mistake

Well, this might be true. Or it might be the ravings of a
disgruntled CSR with a stick up his arse. I have encountered
at least one of those with respect to my orders...So we'll
see...

This is getting more and more confusing... I emailed my rep about the using the $100 coupon code this morning, and she just got back to me 5 minutes ago saying that her supervisor okayed it.

can there office be that big that most of there customer reps didnt know not to use the coupon? makes no sence, if it was true they would spread it around the office in seconds.

You have to consider that they have multiple offices..

Also people have talked to people in diffrent offices I have seen messages of people talking to
1. Business offices which should be dealing with this
2. Gateway Stores
3. Home Offices

Its now monday morning, If its going to hit the fan today would be the day. There website has been neutered to not allow you to purchase this system with $400 off anymore.. so something is happening.

I just find it funny that people are willing to call diffrent offices with the pure intent of ripping gateway off by getting the largest possible amount off possible even if they know they shouldnt be getting that coupon, calling specific offices to try to get around sales tax and more.

Well...You know, that old adage that you can lose money on
each unit but you make it up in volume seems to be at work here...

What's Gateway's cost per unit? Let's conservatively guestimate

Motherboard: $160
Hard Drive: $45
Memory: $20
CD-rom: $15
Floppy: $8
Case: $50
keyboard + mouse: $5
Cabeling: $5
Assembly: $5
Processor: $140
Documentation, accessories: $4
Shipping (ave): $30
Sales commisions and costs: $10 (the guy who sold it to you gets $5,
his boss gets something, and so on; 800 number
calls cost money, and the sales people probably
also draw hourly wages)

These are all conservative guesses. Total is $497. That doesn't
include advertising costs, warranty costs, inventory costs and
probably way underestimates the labor costs for assembly and
shipping.

So in the very best case scenario, they are losing money at $500,
while they'd be making a slight profit at $600.

If the numbers being sold at $500 are very large (hard to say),
then the potential losses are going to be substantial and someone
might put a halt to the <$550-600 sales...

Pretty easy for them to dump the orders under $560. The fine print on the page your "supposed" to be ordering from clearly states:

One promotional offer per server. Offer only valid on new 6400 server purchases. Limit 10 per customer. Cannot be combined with any other offer or discounts.

Lots of folks could be SOL without Gateway having to be the bad guy on this.

Your Gateway order has been placed and is being processed for financial approval. Your estimated arrival date is x/xx/01.

This is what I got when I check the status of my order.

I hope it comes....

Then again whatever happens, if its meant to be, its meant to be.

When I first saw the offer, the promo page had a footnote saying that if you wanted the $400 credit to call the 1-800 number... now it's gone, but the option of buying it online with the $400 credit is gone too.

I just ordered a 2nd server. My first server already shipped, but my rep applied the extra discount to that one as well. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out with my credit card bill and whether I get my 2nd server. I was happy with the original $590 price for 1 server, so I have no complaints no matter what occurs.

Yeah, I was happy with the original $585 price for my first
servers, too. It was only after everyone else started posting
that they were getting better prices that I became dissatisfied.
If all orders < $550 were cancelled, I'd be happy with the $585
price again...

...Psychology at work...

my $0.02 (please no flame wars, just state your opinion)

this was/is an awesome deal. Why do you think the gateway threads
are 600+ in less than a week? It's clear that if they have a
point of presence in your state, you should be charged sales tax.

People are so caught up in making a great deal better, they lose
sight common sense. I read the fine print, and the $400 was promotional,
therefore you shouldn't be allowed to apply the $50 off coupon.
Just because their system isn't perfect, and the CSRs were allowed to
override it doesnt make gateway bad/wrong/evil. They are simply
protecting their business interests without trying to piss customers off.

Hopefully they will just suspend orders less than $560 and mail
confirmation emails to allow those orders to be adjusted. I think they
should probably let the $45 shipping go, as goodwill to those that
were able to persuade the CSR to change it, since it will cost them
something to go back and adjust those too.

In a large distributed organization, information is not communicated
instantaneously. Employees don't get around to reading all postings,
emails, bulletins in a timely fashion. I'd hate to see managers and
CSRs reprimanded when members of our community very likely applied
overzealous and significant pressure to get the same deal that Joe Blow
got (by accident and probably shouldn't have gotten). Remember, they are
trying to keep their customers satisfied, and most of the people calling
are businesses with very legitimate issues, not some petty I want to
save $15 on my shipping because this person got it rant.
(^^^ example of a rant ^^^)

But whatever, I want the best deal as much as the next guy/girl, and
I don't have tons of disposable income. I just want to be honest about
it. Judging from the Kodak DC4800 fiasco, there are too many people
willing to go Aggro and back Gateway into a situation like this...

i'm kinda new to this forum (actually I just joined after hearing about this great deal from Gateway)... but anyway... I ordered 2 of em on saturday for $945 shipped to MA. I hope they don't cancel my order... it still says "being processed for financial approval". I don't know whether that means they're still approving my credit card # or if they're approving the price I was charged ;)

It is the Gateway's problem. Do you guys remember what happened Dell few months ago? They finally honored the price after meadia came into action :)

If they think more than 1,000 orders per day sucks sh1t, wait until they receive 1000+ complaints against them filed at the BBB. If this is true they will sink and I will make sure of that.

If there is truth to this, then Gateway will in likelihood send
out an email to anyone with a pending order to the extent of
"Our CSRs made a mistake, only one offer could be applied to this
server as per the fine print on the coupon. Accordingly, the
server price is $50 more than the price you were quoted. Do you
still want it?" They won't likely address the tax or shipping
issues.

Which I would consider entirely above-board and reasonable.
And I think most people will opt to keep their orders active.

As for a class action suit or other such nonesense...Give it
up. No chance.

Look at it this way....Gateway is a big company, they prolly get the stuff dirt cheap. I doubt the lose money. They just want to be greedy.

my 2 cents.

Gateway is a big company. They just want to remain viable. No
one is getting fat on this deal, even at $560. The profit margins
are pretty thin even at that price. See above analysis.
