OK, I go to the GAteway site and specify a Small business 700 series rig. There is a choice fro DVD-RAM but no ordinary DVD-R (+R, -RW). It is supposed to be able to read CD-ROM, DVD, CD-R, CD-RW but I don't get this.

Isn't DVD-RAM a completely different media?

What is DVD-RAM?

Google is our friend! :) The prices in the article are a bit old but compares the three for you. I think DVD-RAM disks are square in nature, as opposed to the circle discs of DVD-R and DVD-RW. Hope this helps.

Yes I know Google is my friend. But I thought DVD-RAM was going downhill and is almost dead.
Check this out. it's the Gateway site. Look under Optical drives.

Why go with DVD-RAM instead of a DVD-R (+R, -RW) drive?

DVD-RAM discs can hold 9.4 GB instead of 4.7. They're really useful for backups, good for a lot of rewrites (~100,000 or so), and I believe they are kept in a protective case, so scratches on the media aren't an issue.

If you want to back up/store data and don't want to make DVD movies then DVD-RAM is the best way to go.
