Gateway OEM MSI K7T Turbo problem

My dad has an old system which stopped booting a bit ago.
It was a 1gig Athlon T-bird mounted on a Abit KT7, 512 mb
of PC133. After replacing various components, he decided it
was a dead MB.

He wanted to fix it for minimal cash (it's not his main rig, just
a backup, fool around box). He bought a Gateway OEM MSI
K7T Turbo from ComputerGeeks.com

Now, with the new MB, he can only boot into safe mode. Normal
boot results in just bars of color across the screen. He's tried
installing the new drivers, but gets a registry error when he tries.

The bios has (very) minimal options, none to set FSB or AGP bus
speeds. Looking at the Gateway site, it seems to be locked to a
200 processor bus, and either a 100 or 133 memory bus. No
mention of the AGP bus. (Since he's using PC-133, I'm assuming
the memory bus is no problem.)

Oh, he's tried both his original video card (I think it's a Geforce 2 MX)
and a Geforce2 GTS (Creative) that I had lying around. Same problem
with both.

Any ideas? Thanks.
