Gateway Motherboard Processor Help

I own a Gateway 836GM system. It came installed with an Intel D820 chip. The motherboard specs say that it supports * LGA775 socket * 1066, 800, or 533 MHz system bus.
I purchased a E6600 1066Mhz. However when I put it in the system it will not post. I have the latest bios 0406. Any ideas? Will this board even support this processor?

Contact them.

And find out if their systems with the Core 2 Duo CPU's use the same motherboard.

I did contact them. In the chat session they said they did not advise customers to change their processors. They also stated that he did not have access to that kind of information. The tech told me I should contact Intel.

What are you going to do if it doesn't POST after clearing CMOS? RAM shouldn't be an issue if it is good up to 266MHz. Gateway isn't going to come up with a BIOS to address your un-supported mod. Build your own PC if you intend to upgrade the CPU down the road.

SerpentRoyal, I am looking for help on possibly upgrading one of my older systems. The other 3 systems in my house I did build myself. When I purchased this gateway over a year and half ago I found a deal that was too good to pass up. I was hoping someone on this forum had ran into the same problem with some D945 chipsets accepting C2D's.

The PC is probably too old for C2D. Sometimes, a super deal is not that super after all with more testing. Get a $70 Abit IP35-E and E2160 if you want to do it right and still save a lot of $. CPU should be able to hit 3.0-3.2GHz with those $22/GB HP/Crucial DDR2 667 sticks @ hot deals forum. No need to waste $ on 6600 CPU.

The specs for the motherboard doesn't say anything about duo core support only P4. If the MB will run a duo, you will probably have to rely on Gateway for the bios. Might be better off swappin' out the motherboard.
