IBM has an excellent reputation for laptop build quality.

When I tested a Gateway M505 Centrino / ATI 9600 laptop, I was impressed with its solid build quality.

I found out that Wistron makes the M505 for Gateway using Device Manager while trying out the laptop.

From this web page:
"Wistron recieved orders for two IBM NB series, making it IBM's biggest OEM partner. Wistron will make the X-series NBs (super-slim model) amd a new R-series NB"

So the Gateway M505 and some of the IBM ThinkPads are made by the same company -- Wistron.

The website linked to above is a gold mine of information on who makes what for whom. For example:
"Compal has received orders from Apple and Acer for its 15.4 inch wide screen NBs. Compal already makes Dell and HP NBs with the same screen using the Centrino chip. Compal will ship 30-40K Powerbooks a month beginning 2H03. Quanta and Asustek currently make the 15.2 inch and 12.1 inch PowerBooks. Compal will ship 20-30K Centrino NB a month to Acer beginning 4Q03. Compal is king of 15.4 inch NBs."

Apparently, Compal makes the Dell 8600, HP zt3000, and Compaq x1000.

I read somewhere that the x1000 was made by Quanta. Actually, searches turn up conflicting info...

My interpretation of these news stories is that HP intends to switch the manufacturer of its 15.4 inch notebooks from Compal in 2003 to Quanta in 2004.
