Ok, I have my daughters M-1631u Gateway laptop tore down to its motherboard after getting no boot - no power - no beep behavior. I already tried to discharge static as well before dismantling. Even isolated by itself, it doesn't appear I am getting power to the fan and such on the motherboard (testing with voltmeter when pressing power button). There is a lot of opinon out there about the DC jacks failing but my jack doesn't seem discolored in any way and is not melted/warped. I can't physically move it even the slightest bit either. I'm not quite sure how the test the jack itself though. I did test with a voltmeter on the side opposite of the where the jack plugs in and did get a good voltage reading but am not sure what should be the next step to take. Could someone point me in the next step to take to diagnose my power problem? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the super fast reply! Afraid I don't have a lot of detail.. Daughter says she left the laptop in sleep mode (lid closed) on top of her bed for a few days as she spent a couple nights over a freinds house. When she got back, she tried to boot up with a no go. Maybe possible heat issues cause she could have been blocking the vent with a blanket or something??? The case still looks in real good shape so I'm thinking it wasn't dropped.

I took it apart just as a troubleshooting attempt. Eliminated drives, RAM, until eventually all I was left with was the motherboard. I don't remember ever getting a flicker of life from it. Lots of power button pressing with nothing.

Even with the motherboard isolated, I should expect a fan spin up when the power button is pressed, right?

this don't sound to good.do the motherboard smell burned.or some darker spots on it.and leaking capacitor.

I do not notice and discoloration on the motherboard or distorted looking capacitors. I have read in order to acurately test the DC jack I need to touch the leads on the other side of the board underneath the jack. The voltage checks out there too. Could anyone give me some guidance on how to test the power switch, incase that is the issue. I hear you can jump it by touching a piece of metal between two points, I just do not know where those points are.
