Gateway m-6862 steam problem

Anyone else experiencing crashes when playing Steam games on this laptop? I have other non-Steam games that work fine but when I play L4D and Titan Quest through Steam I get crashes every time. Is there maybe an update I'm missing? I've tried with the original ati drivers and using mobility mod to update Catalyst to 8.11 to no result. I've looked into msinfo32 and I see a few occurrences of "Faulting application steam.exe ... faulting module steam.dll" and L4D hanging application. I assume it's a problem with steam because like I said before other games work fine and I did a burn in with Sandra which went fine.

Oh yes one oddity is that I can seemingly play the original Half Life through Steam without crashes. I have several hours logged on it with no crashing.
