Gateway Laptop Fails to Boot

My wife uses a 2yo laptop working from home, and it's having issues booting up lately. The only way we can get it to start is to remove the battery (which is new), unplug the A/C, leave it for about an hour, then it boots up OK. Problem is, when we close it up (and it goes to sleep, presumably), we can never get it to start back up without following the above steps. The fan runs for a couple seconds, but the hard disk light never makes an appearance. Could it be related to the recently purchased replacement battery? I haven't removed and/or reseated any of the ram yet nor have I attempted to start w/o the HD plugged in, etc...; I built an awesome desktop this summer, but I'm not too adept at digging around in the guts of a laptop.

Any ideas?

Sounds like it may be a heat issue if you have to leave it alone for an hour before it will work... is the battery or laptop itself hot?

Your new battery is shown to be compatible with the model of laptop you own right? Have to ask...

Still under any kind of warranty? If so, let a pro figure out. So much easier to troubleshoot something in front of you, rather than trying to figure things out by what someone tells you.

Checked your system logs for any strange messages or errors?

Any connections around where you put the battery in? Check and reseat them if so.

All I can think of atm.
