Gateway Intel Mainboard BIOS Ooops

I recently bought a Gateway GM5478 system and thought I would update the mainboard to the latest BIOS.

I went to Intel and updated the BIOS without a hitch.

The problem this caused is that Gateway uses special settings for their BIOS and now I have a message on boot "The AA number has not been programmed on the system. Press Enter Key to continue." Once the Enter key has been pressed the system boots up and seems to run ok.

But after I found out how Gateway messes with their BIOSes I realized I probably shouldn't have used an Intel BIOS update and used one from Gateway.

So, my problem is this;

The flash fails when I try to downgrade the BIOS to one that is on the Gateway site.

I've tried all three of their updated BIOSes but once the system reboots and the flash starts it stops with an error that the update was unsuccessful.

I've been trying to figure out how to get the Gateway drivers back into the BIOS but everything I've tried hasn't worked. I've removed the CMOS battery (the last time I did I left it off for over half hour), but all that seemed to do was just reset the clock in the BIOS. I've tried a recommendation where you need to remove the BIOS configuration jumper but the system wouldn't even POST.

Is anyone here familiar with the Gateway GM5478 w/Intel DG33TL mainboard? ( http://www.intel.com/products/...board/DG33TL/index.htm )

Any ideas on how to get the Gateway BIOS back?

If you're within the warranty period for Gateway's phone support, call them. If not, I hope they provide online chat.

If your BIOS is socketed, you have two options:

1. If you know someone with the same board, and you have access to a ROM burner, you can flash a copy that known good BIOS to your chip.

2. A qualified local repair shop MAY be equipped and able to do this for you using a copy of the BIOS file from Gateway's site.

Good luck. 🙂

the AA number is probably some special bios epprom string that intel brand boarsd use that the gateway version wont have.

i am suprised that the intel flash update even worked as usually there are bios lockouts for that.
