Hey all,

Working on a computer here (I fix them; mostly software issues but occasionally hardware) and fairly new to troubleshooting completely nonbooting systems. This is a Gateway GT4023E (http://support.gateway.com/s/P...8084/1008084sp2.shtml).

Machine was working fine, but user started getting intermittant graphical corruption that required a reboot (I guess the screen got really garbled). Reboots seemed to fix it for a while, then suddenly the machine wouldn't reboot at all.

Behavior now is, it turns on, the fans spin up and a few lights come on (power, LAN LED in back of motherboard), but there's no beep codes, no hard drive activity, etc...just nothing happens.

The video is onboard as there is no dedicated video card. My first thought is the motherboard is dead since there aren't any beep codes, but the fact that the fans spin up and the LAN LED comes on makes me secondguess that. I suppose it could be processor too, though I think it's pretty rare for processors to just up and die.

Thoughts? Anything worth trying? (I already tried to clear the CMOS with no luck.) Considering unhooking everything and rehooking it back up but not thinking that's likely to help. Any suggestions/feedback appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion - tried that (known good PSU) with no joy - same behavior either way. Also tried a new CMOS battery and another clear. Checked the processor, removed it, reseated...unhooked unnecessary drives...still nothing. Dead board or CPU? Or more to try?
