hello i have an old gateway comp that is a g5-200 and well it uses an intel buisnessman motherboard wich has a pentium 200 mhz socket 7 cpu in it curently. Recently i discovered that amd k6s used the same socket type of socket 7. Anyways i would like to upgrade the speed of this computer to something a bit faster with the lowest cost and or modifications posible. So I would like to replace the cpu and i was wondering if faster amd k6s like around 500 mhz ones would work in this board. This board says it supports up to at least a 233 pentium wich was the last socket 7 pentium made by intel. Anyways if anyone knows anything about this if its posible to upgrade it or not and what not feel free to respond.

This does not sound like a good plan.

Unless you have specs for that board, you could damage a new cpu. The board must provide proper core voltage, multiplier, and bus speed.

Bus speed can be set to 66 and still work, but a gateway means proprietary, very limited upgrade potential. You would be far better off getting a newer system and using the gateway for something else.

yup unfortionently i dont realy have the full spects for the board as its not a machine at my house its just one to use when im at my grandmas once in awhile. The bus speed seems ok but i dont know about the rest. I would have though someone might have had a similar machine here. Anyways i believe i do have the spects because gateway sent out litle manuals that came with the comp on all the components back then including the motherboard. Hopefully they are still there and i can look at them next time. I guess for now there isnt much i can do. I looked into powerleap wich had something to push that system to 400 mhz k6 but it seemed kind of expensive to me. About $80 and $55 or so on ebay.

And don't forget you are still saddled with the slow ram (probably 72pin simms).

You could try gateway to see if they had an upgrade for that system.

Its just not worth throwing money at something like that. A used P3 system could be bought for $300- $400 and is a better solution IMHO.

actualy it uses DIMMS but only has two slots and uses pc 66 sdram so yes i would say it would be slow ;)
