Gateway FPD1975W 19" Widescreen LCD

I'm finally taking the plunge and trading in my clunky old CRT for an LCD. This model is on sale at CompUSA for $159.99 this week, which seems like too good of a deal to pass up. Specs are as follows:

Resolution: 1440 x 900
Refresh: 8ms
Brightness: 300 cd/M2
Contrast: 700:1
Viewing angle: 150/135

I know there are better LCDs out there, but this seems like a pretty good model that is within my budget (<$200). In other words, please don't recommend a $300 monitor 😉 Anyone have any good/bad experiences with this monitor or better recommendations? Thanks in advance!

I believe their dead pixel policy is 8 or more. I should know better, since I used to work there! I do know that if you buy their replacement plan, they will replace the monitor for even one dead pixel. I'm sure the replacement plan is ridiculously overpriced though, so I don't know if I'd recommend it.

So the price looks good, what do you know about the monitor itself?

Just picked the monitor up and I'm quite happy with it. It took me a little while to get the colors just right (default settings sucked), but once I tweaked them, it looks really nice. I have a hard time telling the difference between this model and my CRT when gaming, which is pretty sweet. My only real gripe with this model is that it only includes a VGA cable, so I had to buy a DVI cable separately. I'm still waiting for that to ship, so I can't comment on the DVI quality yet.

I hope you've got better luck with yours than I did with mine. My first one had a line across the bottom of the screen just above where the task bar is. The line was yellow in the middle and darker on the ends.

My second one won't gives me a jacked up picture if I turn my pc on with the dvi cable plugged in. Works fine with the rgb cable and if I plug the dvi cable in after the pc is already on. Also if I turn my pc on with both rgb and dvi plugged in, I get the jacked up picture through dvi and it won't recognize any source from the rgb cable.

I had heard from guys at work that Gateway makes decent monitors(and I work at Circuit City, so the salespeople know pretty well what is good and what isn't). So far for me they are 0-2. I'm returning mine and picking up something a little more expensive (unfortunately) that's a brand I trust more.

This too is my first lcd, so maybe I'm retarded and doing something wrong, but I talked to gateway tech support and they couldn't figure out the problem either. But then again, I generally trust tech support about as far as I can throw them.

Cheers!

The specs on that panel look dead on with the Hanns G linked up there...I wonder what panel they both use?
